Questions about starting to learn IIDX doubles

As mentioned in the title, I just started getting into doubles. My main question is what would you guys recommend for a play area? I can't feasibly sit 2 controllers on my lap without them bouncing around and I don't have a desk or table that's the right height or very convenient. I have two (or will have very shortly) Konami controllers ($90, not ASC). Also, does anyone have the dimensions of the arcade machine, i.e. how far apart the two controllers are in the arcade?
