Mods, feel free to lock this or move it to Random Chat if that's where it belongs.

I am looking (well, more just researching) for the program that you guys use to remix songs. I have downloaded many stepfiles that contain no original content (that would come from a keyboard or synthesizer), just mixed and mashed clips from songs (specifically, Maxes and Paranoias). I was wondering what programs you guys use, and how much they cost, where you could get them, etc.

Again, I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but for some reason the search feature wouldn't work for me tonight.

yes. you might be able to get started with fruity loops at a decent price (is it free?), but I know for a fact that cakewalk pro audio cost me upwards of 500 bucks, and that's mostly midi composition and audio editing (I suppose you could use it for remixing...I use it for music comp though).

Wow. Fruity Loops website says 100 bucks, but I guess that's cheap for this kind of software.

Ok, new question. Is there any freeware/shareware out there that maybe has limited abilites, but at least gets the job done?

Eh--Fruity Loops is incredibly hard to use. I've been using it for a few months, and, I still don't understand it. erm.gif

I looked into this a while back myself. My conclusion? This is one case where you will truly get what you pay for (kind of like DDR pads;).

Bottom line is, you can get a lot of stuff for free that is practically useless, or your can pay somewhere around $50-60 for some decent but limited low-end mixers, or you can go all out and get the really good ones for more than a CF pad.

I have an ex-dj friend who has been using one the ~$60 programs for a while and he likes it ok, but it looks pretty limited to me... it doesn't have the ability to change pitch or bpm, which are two features that I would find almost a necessity. I kind of backed off when I found out how much the good stuff was. Now if I have that kind of money to spend, I'd likely get myself a cf pad;)

=0 i like it because its incredibly easy to use.

but for editing existing songs, sound forge is the awesome.

just to answer, if someone who stands next to you watching you play PSMO but you get a D on it, versus somebody who understands perfect attacking and stuff, will think you suck. A player is considered good in my opinion when a player of a higher level comments about you or see's you triple A a song. Or if somebody looks up to you. Hope it clarifies.

Wow, that is pretty close to what I was looking for. The only drawback is those annoying little popups after you've used 150 actions disgust.gif . Oh well, yeah, that was really really close to what I was looking for, if not exactly.

Countless programs to be used for said purpose!

Fruity Loops - Take sound bytes and make them into loops. Weird learning curve, nice interface. $100

Acid DJ - A program a lot like fruity loops. Many optional expansion packs too, this goes for $50 on Sonic Foundry's site.

SoundForge - Another program by Sonic Foundry, good for creating sounds, or making sounds sound like you want them to, granted that it's a LOT of work. this one's also $50.

CoolEdit - Quick and dirty editing program, $30-50 bucks, extremely easy to use.

Protools - The ultimate in everything. Only packaged with Digidesign's equipment, useful for editing things, applying filters, recording your own stuff, lots of things. Units cost $800, and some of the filters cost as much as $3000. However, it's worth it.

Sonar - Somewhat hard learning curve, but very precisely manipulated. $200 or so. Good for just track editing in general too.

Hope that helps

You may want to play around with Audacity, which is free.

yeah, I almost bought sonar for the direct midi to mp3 recording conversion, but when I tried the demo it was so nearly identical to cakewalk pro audio 9 that I just figured it wasn't worth the money. They are both almost exactly the same at track editing since they are both cakewalk products, though sonar is a bit faster to use due to a less clunky interface.

Learning curve on both products is killer if you've never used it before...I've been using cakewalk since 1998 (5.0) and I still don't know everything about it since I use it for midi notation and minor recording sessions.

EDIT: I'd also like to mention that of any sequencing software I've used, Sonar and CWPA have probably the most precise quantization and accurate note duration settings (which can be manipulated by hand as long as you know the decimal values for said durations).

My advice would be just to mess around in Fruity Loops.

You can do more than people think with it.

Definately a good program. That's easy enough for beginners. Yet, enough to keep the more advanced people busy.

I have a program that allows me to remix songs together, change BPM, and add certain sounds to the song. I used this and Goldwave to create some kick buttocks remixes E1.gif I dont remember the name of the application though cuz im at school right now, so when i get home ill tell ya what its called.

EDIT: Ahhh i just remembered! Its called atomixmp3! Its a great program! There is a free version which will bug you to buy it if you let the program sit still, but otherwise its great. Heres the link

LOOP WHOLE ALERT
You can download acid pro 4.0 demo for free. It has all the software but after a whileot becomes inperative. So delete it and download it again! I've been doing that and it works pretty well for me. The only problem i've found is sampeling songs is kinda hard.

oi! i use acid pro 3 for all of my mixing and it is really easy to use. you can get acid express for free but it is so limited. get reg. acid or an acid style pack ($30 where i live) and mix away. i use sound recorder to make my own loops and it works well for a standard program.
