A problem with my stepmania adpator...

I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but I bought an adaptor for my stemania so I can plug in my pad to my comp, but there is a fat problem. When I try to play the songs, it wont let me hit the up and down arrow at the same time, or the left and right at the same time. The reason this is happening, I think, is because it is automatically defaulted to the typical settings of a play station 2 controller, which doesnt allow you to press the up and down, or the left and right at the same time on the arrow pad on the controller. I can't seem to fix this problem, is there something I can change in stepmania to fix this problem, or is it something I have to fix with my adaptor settings? I have tried many different things to attempt to solve it on my own. Any suggestions??
