Soft Pad Problems

A while ago I bought one of those black dance mats that can be used for either PS2 or Xbox...think it's called Beat Pad pro and I can't remember who makes it. So the first time I use it I notice that I am getting Good/Great when I am stepping correctly on beat. I play about ten songs with it and then I notice I have to step slightly before the arrow gets to the outline to get a perfect, so I plug in my other mat and then I get a AA sdg. Did this happen to anyone else who bought this mat, or am I just screwed up? Any way I can fix it?
