Would you say reading steps for faster songs is something that is only natural or something you gain if you practice

Probably something you gain from practice. Because when you have played for a while, your brain starts to recognize patterns and your feet just automatically do them.

Like the others said, it's a practiced skill.

The more you do it, the better you'll get, but some players can definitely learn much quicker and have an easier time with it. So individual skill does factor into it somewhat.

I agree, i played like, nearly 4 months before i got to heavy, and my friend has been playing for nearly a year and can only do like, 3-footers and below and nothing in standard.

it gets better with practice. im sure no one out there is a natural. i mean natural in the sense that one passed a heavy song the first time they try DDR. i used to really suck, and was amazed at how people could read all those arrow, and thought anyone who could pass afronova/basic was god.

after a while, you realize to associate the arrows colors and spacing in context with the beat...and the step patterns come with experience...one example is learning the "Afronova Shuffle". By recognizing what it looks like, you can do it when it shows up in other songs, such as SP-Trip Machine or Be Lovin.
