Ps1 or Ps2? For Ps1, Konamix is the best mix. If you have a Ps2, DDR Max2 is the latest ver. (aside from Max[1]), but you should wait for Extreme, it comes out around 9-21 or 22. I hope somone else can give you pad info, because I'm horrible in that department. I myself have a Mad Catz brand (A cheap but affordable brand) pad duck-taped to the floor with a few planks of wood for arrow support, and that works fine for me. _________________

look at the song lists here fore info on the licensed stuff(uh... i doubt you'll recognise the konami originals though) to see what mix you want. when your a beginner, its just basicly about what songs you like anyway(not that its much different when you get better or anything...)
for a pad, if you want cheap, get the official konami pad. if you can manage $100, get an ignition. |

Yeah,I personally like Max, but max2 is easier to find. i have the madcatz pads, but recommend the naki dance pad revolution 2 pads. you can get them at gamestop and gamestop stores for around $25. It's really just a personal preference. but the Redoctane ignition 2.0 pads are the best non-metal pads. in my opinion. www.redoctane.com has them, as well as some gamestops. good luck, practice, practice, practice,go to arcades, and you'll get pretty good.

Red Octane Red Octane Red Octane...... You want an ignition pad that isn't going to cost you $100 and work the same? Go on Ebay, I got two ignitions for $57 after shipping. Red Octanes tear inside just a beautifully as the cheap ones. Any ignition you buy, I'd highly recommend you modify them with a nice piece of particle board about 3/4 of an inch thick, round the edges, cut out the section where the controller piece is and you're set to go.
"Oh but Red Octane is sold in stores and easier to get ahold of" Fine pay twice as much for one if that's all you can do but PLEASE modify it in the same manner if you want it to last more than a couple weeks or by some miracle a month or more.
My current ignitions have lasted me since March and are still going strong. I may only be able to play up to 9 foot songs and a few of them in that difficulty, but I have friends that play Max. (period), Paranoia Survivor Max and all sorts of other crazy stuff on them and they are still going strong.
To the original poster:
Have you seen the initials MSOH on those machines at all or do you know if they clear them off at the end of the day? I was in California for 2 months last year and my DDR buddy and I used to frequent there, I'm sure he still plays there every so often. Just thought I'd ask if you've seen his initials up there.
Also a good place to practice is the Valencia Lanes I do believe is what it's called (right across the street from Mountasia). When I was there they had an Extreme and the other machine rotated between 4th + and 5th mix, both of which were $0.75 joint premium meaning you can have someone else join you either for free or you guys can work out splitting the cost. The Extreme was in really good shape and I played there a lot. _________________

The 20 dollar Naki pads are really good for a beginner. MAX1 to me was a lot more fun, but that was also because it was more difficult, so MAX2 might be ok for you to. _________________

That thing sure didn't last long when I started learning 8th notes. Of course at that time I was a total noob so I didn't know anything about modifications. _________________

My Naki pad is the only soft pad that I bought at the beginning of my DDR "career" that still work atleast semi decently. All the others are in the trash. I cant do heavy on it like on my Konami soft pad, but its still decent. _________________
