What began your DDR legacy?

I remember how I first got started... there was this girl (we'll call her Mel) that I liked. And one day I went over Mel's house with her and her cousin, and we were in her basement. I didn't have a clue what DDR was except whatever it was this thing Mel would always talk about in her DJ. So I watched her... unaware of how insanely good she was since I had never played myself.

So the next day I figured, "Well, if this girl is really obsessed with DDR then I better learn a thing or two about it." So I borrowed a pad and 6th mix from a friend and I tried it out. First time I was upstair in my room... didn't quite work with the lack of room and, well, being upstairs. So I brought everything down to my basement and started out there... I remembered how awkward I felt trying to dance to Remember You on light. I also remember not being able to beat Dunk22 (light) no matter what. And just looking at Max 300 (light) filled me with this sense of hopelessness. I began to care less about figuring out this DDR thing so I'd have a chance with Mel and I was steadily becoming more addicted myself. And so began my DDR legacy...

I dunno if this topic has come up before, I'm sure it has. But the search engine is being a butt... so I can't really check. Oh well.

I got started when I downloaded (heh) a DDR 6th Mix Megamix (all one track) and I became obsessed with the music, and then I started playing...

A while back I was watching TV late at night and King of the Hill was playing. I had nothing to do so I decided to watch it and it was the episode where the Hills went to Japan, during the episode I saw what seemed to be a dance machine type game being played and I wondered if something like that really existed. I hopped onto some the irc chan I usually lurk in and asked around to see if anyone knew about it, luckily someone pointed out this site and now I'm here.

Well, I had heard a lot about it from online friends, and figured, "How much fun can it be? It's just some arrows. I don't get the hype of it!", so I just kind of ignored it for about...six months. (Man, I wish I had started when I first heard about it - I'd be so much better now!)

Then one day, a friend of mine from school dragged me down to a mall that's on my way home and showed me Pump it Up. I remember my first time, I was so hopelessly confused. I would hit the arrow, like, ages before it reached the top of the screen.

My first time on a DDR machine wasn't until April. My stepsisters and I were at Six Flags, and I was kind of missing PIU because the mall it was in got rid of the PIU just as I was getting the hang of it. So we saw an arcade, and I was like, "Hey! We should see if they have a dance game!" and - lo - they did! So, we played DDR for a little while, and I got hooked.

I know exactly how I first got started. One day 2 years ago it was my friend Derek's b-day and I went over to his house for the party type thingy, and one of his friends that I knew as well had brought over DDR Lonamix and 2 pads stapled to wood. I didn't play for a while because I was nervoud I would screw it up horribly or somrthing. So when I finally did it I was forced to do end of the century on basic. I failed horribly, but the rest of the time I was there I played it non-stop trying to pass that song. I didn't, and afterwards I started saving up money to buy the game and a pad for myself. I didn't get it till months later, but once I did I rapidly got better, and got to where I am today

I know how it went. I remember playing the game when I was like 10 at first, just hitting arrows here and there. Then like I'm not sure how much time later (Like a year, maybe 6 months), I saw a bunch of people playing. They were on Maniac Mode and playing extremely fast. Well, I thought that was the coolest thing I'd ever seen, so I got DDRMAX, and a pad for my birthday, and started playing. I got really addicted, and just kept playing. Even though I stayed on basic mode. I just barely got into Trick, but that's not really the subject....

the first time i played was at a friends birthday party with his craptastic pad and uber outdated version. but i was hooked. we spent most of the night playing drop the bomb over and over and over again. hehe

How did i get my start? Look at my name: SalukiDanceMaster. I started getting into ddr in College at SIUC at Duckets GameStation.

The first time I had a chance to play was back in 2001 in Florida at a Disney Quest. My girlfriend and I both learned how to play that day. She learned faster than I did

. When I left highschool to attend college I didn't look for DDR. I "ran into it". During "Engineering Week" I kept seeing flyers saying Duckets Game Station(which featured console and PC LAN games). It wasn't until I went out friday night and discovered DGS on "the strip". I walked in played a little DDR with the center area syndrome. That didn't last too long and then i discovered you don't have to stand in the middle! However, at the time I was the only one playing. A couple of the locals (which included the Legendary Big Footed Justin) saw me playing one day and wondered if i was very skilled at the game. They asked me if I knew how to do the "crip walk" on the pads. I laughed and told them I'm still learning. So the first week I met them I kind of coached them along while they were playing. Being a college student I could not keep up with their mastering speed since time has to go into studying. A few weeks later we were doing standard songs but they evolved so fast they were already in Step Step Revolution(3rd Mix Korea V2 Machine). And thus begins my tale of being legendary.

While I wasn't able to keep up with the locals I still kept playing to improve my skills. Once I discovered how to use turning to do L + D + R combinations i was ready to move onto some heavy stuff. The amount of players kept growing and it finally brought the owner's attention. Doug even joined in the fun (Follow the Sun: Double Heavy)

. The crowds became so large the entire front entrance would be blocked every weekend.

Since the machine made quite a penny, 4th mix plus was on its way. When 4th mix+ arrived the card line on the machine was filled with the cards from players all over southern Illinois during every weekend (until finals). The next semester the first DDR tournament was held at Duckets. The boys from Paducah took home first place in the maniac challenge (....) and the Freestyle competition ( My Summer Love - Light) The worst show IMHO. Although i was only able to get second in the freestyle competition ( Cafe Double Light) and only was able to get the second round in the maniac challenge i still did not quit playing. Later that semester we received an Extreme Machine. Once again more players began to show up, but not as just players, rivals. The tale of the Mall vs Duckets

Duckets owns the Mall players End Of Story. Talk about alot of maniac newbies that think they are better than seasoned veterans when they can't even do complex melody and complex rhythm songs such as: Luv To Me and Sana No Morrette (yeah thaey suck that bad). Teaming up with the guys from DGS we tagged the crap out of their machine's scoreboards with DGS. We still to this day hold the highest score for all courses.

To this day I still go around and play mostly in the Chicago area tagging any machine i can with either DGS or ISHY. If i make you play Luv To Me , INSERTION, or Can't Stop Falling in Love(speed mix) first you will know it's me. hehe

My Wish: To recreate the DDR Franchise by Incorporating popular songs from the 90s to Now; mostly dance music. I would have music from Just Blaze, some of the new J-Pop like Ayumi Hamasaki. I would also include all of the music from US 1 to Extreme. The machine would have different modes like Freestyle, Ghost, Super Versus, Upload a StepFile+Song and Tracks in the game that would make a player meet a certain condition to unlock secret steps or an extension to a song (Ex. Miko - Miko Miko Nurse). Ghost: White arrow that changes the next set of arrows; Super Versus: Tetris attack anyone?; Freestyle: Allows the person to play with fail off but it has suggestion arrows which would increase your freestyle score and also has a crowd rating(by DB level recorded after the song) which would also there would be a freestyle board. Some Free style songs would be Freeway - Flipside.

Some other ideas i have was to have either a solo pad or 8 - 9 pad modes.

I would love to implement this idea just have to strive for that Electrical and Computer Engineering Degree

My Style: I try to incorporate actual dance moves into DDR steps. I always try to step smooth instead of mashing. I always try to put some funk into any song I play even if it's a MAX song.

First off I'm new here so an introduction is in order. My name is Trevor Mckenzie,age 14. I live in Passaic. I've played Heavy mode for 2 years. My home arcade is Rack N' Roll (check the machine locations.) I first started playing DDR when I was 8. I saw this other kid kicking buttocks at it and i had to try. I instantly found something I didn't hate. I'm called slow learner because i've played longer than everyone i've met and aot of people who are better than me example people like Akeno who haven't been playing as long but are amazing. But I just started taking it seriously so I'll get better I hope...

I saw some of my friends playing at a party I went to so I tried it out and got hooked immediatly. I borrowed a pad and the game about a week later then after another week or two I bought my Cobalt Flux. Now about two and a half months after I started I'm better than everyone who got me into the game.

It doesn't help that all they ever say is they're too fat when I play the 10s. I'd think that would want to make them play more!

Ah, well, I'm not that good, only Maniac mode, no ten footers, but I'm somewhat of a local legend because I'm only 13. I'm started playing it a while ago when my mom decided to homeschool for a year. I was at the arcade and I saw these guys playing DDR, and I was like, "Whoa, that looks like a great workout". I told my mom about it, she liked the idea, and here I am, Freestyling at age 13!

Last summer around august i went up to maine w/ my friend. We went to a Mini-Golf place and when we were done we went into the arcade. There, was DDR. I had seen it before but was afraid to try it cuz i thot everyone would make fun of me, but in this arcade it was just me and my friend. So we played Vs. Mode and we both sucked really really bad...but thats what got me hooked...When a bought it for x-box is when i really started my "ddr legacy" though. I play it every day at least once.

My DDR legacy started when I first heard about it from my friend Megan. She had been ranting about it and flaunting a DDR shirt all around school, so, when she invited me to try it out for the first time at the team auditions that she started at our school, I played, failed miserably, made it on the team(how did that happen?) and have been hooked ever since. I've played so much in 8 months I passed her up, well, close enough at least. She hasn't been playing for a while and her 6 steps are looking rusty. Strange, huh? The wierdest thing though is when I started playing, I was reluctant about even trying. I thought it looked a little stupid, but I was an ignorant 14 year old(8 months ago..lol)

Well my cousin played Stepmania and had a freind that played on a pad. My cousin got hook and got a pad and ultramix. He then came to Fl for a visit and i played and got hooked. Now i can do 9 footer working at passing Max 300 (i falied on the damn freeze arrow

so close so close)
