Is it just me, or does anyone else just get tired of elitests? I mean, not people who can beat songs that you can't, but ones that will correct how you pronounce, critique your stepmotions in manners either unneeded or non-constructive, or comment on your song selection? ("Man, everyone picks this song, you should do Hyper Eurobeat instead") Those, and people who are the hardest of the hardcore of anti-bar usage (where they complain at you if you so much as touch the bar mid-song) kind of get on my bad side.
I haven't had to deal with anyone like that for a while since pretty much everyone at the arcade across the street is cool as hell, but it came up in conversation earlier tonight and got me thinking. I dunno, if I'm the only one then I'll shut up. |

I've encountered players like that, but I'd consider them to be "overly enthusiastic", not "elitists". An elitist wouldn't even bother to talk to you because he'd consider you too far beneath him.
But yeah, it's kind of annoying, and I prefer not to run into those people, but I can understand where they're coming from, so it doesn't tick me off that much. |

Whatever you do, don't play IIDX.
Yeah, there will be elitists in any community, especially in a community that started as exclusive as DDR's. Before the game hit mainstream, the community was more of a clique, and a lot of people hate giving that up, which is where a lot of elitism. Then there are other people who are just plain full of themselves (which is actually closer to what you're talking about, I think) who believe that their having more skill allows them to dictate the terms of the game to you. And that's going to happen no matter what you do or where you go. _________________

hmm...I have really never encountered anyone like that here in Nor Cal, and at the places that I play at don't have anyone who are an Elitist.... mostly what I encounter here in Nor Cal are just kids, and overly cocky...not Elitist though, oh yeah, did I mention kids who just stomp on the pad for no reason... _________________

This is so true.. When I was new, this one dude made fun of me this one time.. just a small thing, but it got me really mad and I never forgot about it. Well, I saw him again recently, challenged him, and beat him. It was so cool, although I don't think he knew who I was.. I didn't say anything. _________________

theres not many of these Elitisms people where i play. When i go to the arcade i'm lucky to see like one person at the DDR machine. If i got bothered by an Elitism person, i would really like look at them with a stupid face and turn around and play!!! |

The people where I play are mostly pretty cool and have given me a lot of helpful advice so I feel pretty lucky. If only they'd fix the pads. |

I'll take advice if it's given under helpful pretenses, but if someone's just being a pompous buttocks they're going to get a blank stare and be otherwise ignored by me. _________________

I don't think anyone has ever told me not to pick a song since everyone picks it or anything but I have come across people who look down on anyone who touches the bar at all. Granted I rarely do it because I can keep my balance most songs but sometimes it's just better (for me at least) than, well falling. |

Whenever I see some loudmouth jackass going on about how he's the shit at anything, I go and kick their asses on something, and they'll feel bad. I get the satisfaction of knowing that I'm better than the other guy. Seeing him frustrated will put a smile on my face.
Whenever I shake the hand of somebody after a game because I beat him and he shows respect for me, I'll smile and nod. But deep down inside, I know that I'm better than him. Or her. And I'll feel good.
I'm an elitist. And damn proud. _________________

Is it OK to ask other players certain questions? I asked someone today if they had the game at home, and I also asked if they use Training Mode. I then proceded to tell them that they should probably use Assist 4 to help read the 16ths in certain songs. Is this being Elitist?
As well, I sometimes get the temptation to do certain songs on Heavy after seeing someone do them on Light or Standard. Is this bad? _________________

The IIDX community isn't really that elitist is it? I thought it was more competition.. "Hardcore" DDR players often seem to be the most elitist, specially in the US.. _________________

I'm sure if it was sold for profit, Konami would clamp down on it (I'm sure it's a matter of time before they clamp down on ITG).[/quote]

No, elitism is believing that your opinions, beliefs, and your own self are worth more than anyone else's, and that anything that differs from those should not even exist, or be supported.
It has nothing to do with bragging, being a hot-head, or anything of such nature. In a DDR-like context, a good example of elitism would be those who shun other players about trivial matters such as bar-raping, speed-modding, and other things that are only a matter of personal preference. Someone who can't respect somebody else's personal choices because they think their preferences should be set as the "standards" is an elitist. _________________

Actually elitism isn't really thinking that everybody should think the same way that you do. It's thinking less of people because they don't. Subtle difference, but important. Also, any real elitist wouldn't bring himself down to the level of people and try to fix their technique, because then there would be no one to laugh at.
Also, it's kind of hard to be elitist in ddr, because most pa'ers I know rape the bar like a hot 13yr old. They can't pretend they're better than everyone else, because they use the bar. However, they can pa, so it's ok. Once you get into ten-foot territory, the only elitism is to those not in it... bwahaha. _________________
