the word is "teh". i cant make sense of it.
ITG, SM, DWI? Are all these different dance related machines?
also, just so this post wont take up room, why dont other ppl ask for definitions here?(even tho improbably the only stupid guy here.)

On 1337: It has many different forms. 1337, l33t, leet, etc. It's a shortened way of saying "Elite." It's a form of speech hackers used to use (before it became popular) to communicate without being understood. t3h t4l|< W1T# NUMB3R5 & 5yMB0lZ. "Teh" is playing on the common mispelling of "The." Just a leet thing.

Uhm, not quite. This is an extremely common misconception.

A History of '31337SP34K'. 2600, Volume 19, Number 3, p. 40 wrote:
"Elite Speak" really took off with the onset of newsgroups. The net was growing, bandwidth increasing (I was now up to a 1200 baud modem), and newsgroups were becoming more popular. But a... problem arose. Some server administrators felt the need to control the content and censor speech that they found "questionable". They would regularly filter the database to delete posts containing "objectionable material" just like the content filtering software of today.

What this meant was that you either got your message deleted by the administrators or you found loophopes to outsmart the filters. That is what hakkerz do. I get a lot of flak from n00bs who don't understand why I say "hakkerz" instead of "hackers". The reason is simple. Since "hacking" fell under the "objectionable material" category, we had to intentionally misspell the word to avoid get kill-filed. OK, so they added "hakker" to their filter. But what about "H4ck3r", "H4kk3r", "Hax0r", and so on? We kept adapting the language. .... Eventually, they realized that it was impossible to block a polymorphic language, and they gave up.

I know this is a random place to bother posting all of that... but meh, for some reason this time around I felt inspired to waste some time tracking down an old magazine. Obfuscation of speech wasn't the goal at all, it was simply to help prevent their posts from being deleted. E10.gif
