I have some but don't actually use them. I can see them being good if you want to play with shoes on and they probably help wear and tear on the pad but I play in my socks and prefer the feel without them. Also if you do want to use them, you pretty much have to tape them to the pad or something. |

I don't know what brand mine is but it has zippers on the top and it is at least 3 years old. (It came on a Topway pad!) Anyhow, to use it you unzip it, slide the softpad inside, and zip it shut. You know those plastic sleeves you put on trading cards? These are just giant versions of those for DDR pads. No tape is required.
I say they definitely help. Imagine this situation: You've modded a softpad by covering it with a sheet of plastic and stapling it to a giant piece of plywood. By doing this you've made it super-durable but you've lost the feel of the pad. I've played on a pad like this and my problem was that I kept 'falling off' the pad. Before I bought my Ignition I liked my pad cover because it didn't change the shape of pad but it still made it durable enough to play fast songs on. Keeping my balance without shoes on is still a problem (I only play in my socks too) but I'd need a metal pad to fix that problem. As far as spending less than the price of an Ignition on your pad goes I'd definitely recommend one. And if you're gonna do the staple-to-plywood mod then you might be better of using a real pad cover instead of a chair mat. Its probably only marginally more expensive too. |
