I'm currently in the process of organizing one of the largest DDR tournaments ever in Oregon. This tourney will be on a public stage where thousands of people will be there to watch the contestants.
I really want to make the largest section freestyle because crowds, especially ones who've never seen the game, go crazy. It's amazing the reaction you get dancing a freestyle facing the crowd on light mode then you do a very difficult song for score.
I was told by someone that the DDR freestyle scene has really died down over the last few years and I would be lucky to find contestants.
Is this true or is he just out of his mind? _________________

Wouldn't this be better suited in its own regional forum?
Anyway, to answer your question, yes. VERY few, though. The freestyle scene has died down tremendously, and now it's all about tech/PA. _________________

I live in California, and there really isnt that much freestyling here, my friends and I sometimes freestyle at the arcade, and we draw quite a crowd sometimes, but we are the only ones I have seen. |

Well I can't give an example from my area because there really isn't a DDR scene around here but I've seen a few ppl try to FS (like me) who weren't very good at it. I wish there were more FSers but I do believe they're gonna become more scarse before it gets better. _________________

I've never known the Pacific Northwest to have a large group of freestylers, it's mostly technical players. I could name only three freestylers from that area, and one of them is there only half the time (I think). You'd probably get a better idea on the PNW forum or on the Global BBS.

Let me tell you a story. There was once a brawny man who wanted to host a show for gothic people. He decided to go to the most populated gothic website and anounce his show. But the problem was, there were few truly gothic people on the website so he assumed the true goths dont exist anymore and settled for using partial goths on his show. His show got cancelled for being aanother cheap goth show.
There was another man who wanted to make a goth show but instead of going to the most populated goth website, he went to small goth parties and found the most gothic people ever. He started his show and it became famous. _________________

I will agree with you guys the Pacific Northwest is full of highly skilled technical players, but I've never seen freestyling in person. I was worried that it was a general trend and in some senses it seems to be. I guess alot of the tournaments are very specific and are usually hosted at an arcade where the crowd is DDR enthuiasts who appreciate highly skilled players and enjoy watching people compete at the hardest levels.
My tournament will likely be at a huge public venue where thousands of people will be around to watch and people who are new to the game really get a kick out of the freestylers.
I guess the only way to make freestyling popular again is to give players and opportunity to perform infront of a crowd like this. Hopefully i'll find enough people so we can atleast have one freestyle competition. _________________

yeah, it seems that most of the technical players live in the west while the FS'ers (such as myself) live in NY. 'Course, if you are doing a Freestyle Tourney, you have to throw Tech in there to draw a large DDR Crowd. |

I'm curious to know how you'd draw "thousands" of people to watch a DDR competition. |

There would definately be technical as well. As far as the draw this tournament will be hosted at a huge annual festival that draws thousands of people, many whom I sure would love the opportunity to watch some great DDR players. _________________
