Well, I don't know if phpBB has a feature for this, but users should be able to cancel their account or ban themselves. I know many people who would rather not be a member of these boards anymore for reasons which are very obvious to the smart of mind on this board. Any chance that this feature is possible and will be integrated?

is it not enough to just stop visiting the boards?

If a user wanted to be banned, s/he could always ask. I'm sure the mods would be happy to oblige.

I'm in the process of taking psych, one of the best courses ever, and that is not the way most people would feel. They need more than to just stop visiting the boards.

Also, are you saying that the mods/admins like to ban people? In order to get banned by a mod/admin, you would have to PM them. Then I'm not even sure if a mod has permission to just ban someone who requests one.

A more reasonable way would be to start a thread in "Site Feedback" and ask for the ban. This way someone who has the power to excercise this right will see your request. But then the "Site Feedback" board may become one of the largest boards in this forum.

If this ban/cancellation option is not available through phpBB, then maybe there should be a thread for this purpose in the "Site Feedback" board. This way we won't have a huge amount of people starting a lot of threads. It would be one thread for all of the people.

I hate to tell you this, but your psych class is incorrect. In theory, yes, it would take more for most people, but in practice it doesn't.

The amount of requests we get for account bannings is minimal, not nearly enough to warrant the special addition of the tool. If it's in the next phpBB upgrade, there's a possibility of it, but I highly doubt that we would ever search this feature out because it doesn't happen often enough for it to matter.

Oh god no. Then we'd have all manner of idiots converging on that thread to have their accounts banned "for fun", and then they'd make new accounts.

Something J Dogg said to me a long time back that I'm remembering...it essentially amounts to "You should hesitate to give users a new button to push, because they'll push it too much."

As a side note - All the mods have the power to warn. Since banning is an automatic action which is derived from warning, all mods have the power to ban.

Haha, my psych class never directly stated this exactly. I derived that statement which I said earlier from what I learned in psych. So the class was not wrong, I was.

If your account is banned, isn't your IP address prevented from making a new account? I am aware that one may change their IP address, but that is a tedious process. So therefore, if an idiot decides to ban himself "for fun," wouldn't it prevent him from creating a new account?

There are 3 ways to ban in phpBB: Username, IP Address, and email address. The default option is the username, though just punching in the IP address/email address can be done, too.
