Hi, I have a problem and I figured someone here might be able to help/advise.

I play DDR on a BNS Pad with the foam insert on foam rubber flooring in my basement. Whether I wear shoes or not the impact causes me pain in the soles of my feet and ankles after about 10 minutes. This hasn't gone away, and I've been enduring it for about 2 months. The pain goes away after about 5 minutes of rest and there doesn't seem to be any lasting weakness or damage.

Is there any recommended footwear? Or does anyone else have this problem? I'm flat-footed, I imagine that's a factor.

Thanks,

I'd recommend wearing gel shoe inserts, wrapped around your foot with something like they put on big arm wounds and such. The cloth stuff.

And I think it is your flat footed-ness. Try dancing on your tiptoes?

I'm flat-footed too. This causes some problems, but this one can probably be fixed. Having flat feet, our entire support system is warped. Impact in your feet can put stress on your back. I find that i cant run down a slope. Standing for a long time also gives me back pain. If you don't have them, you should probably get orthotics, which will help you stand straight. That is, if they are flexible flat feet. The orthotics will just go right into your shoes. Maybe you should talk to a podiatrist if this keeps happening.

EDIT: Also, when walking around the house barefoot, if you normally wear orthotics in your shoes, you should wear some kind of sandals or something which has an arch in order to give the normal support of orthotics. Otherwise, it will cramp a lot in the flat part, just a sudden muscle pain which comes for 30 second or so and goes away. Anyway, that's the info and advice i can give, having experienced it myself. You may also find you bend forward a bit when walking.

my dad had the same pain in his ankles from walking (like exercise walking) and we went to a shoe store *not payless* and tell them that you need shoes that will support your ankles or something that can help your ankles while exercising... the New Balance sneakers are probably the best though... nerd.gif

New Balance are probably best: most width.

I'm also flat footed also, and I used to have sore feet after playing. I think it might be your style, I've found that keeping your weight forward really helps with endurance and foot pain. If you're putting the impact on the balls of your feet, you'll be able to keep your muscles looser.

I'd recommend you consciously change your playstyle. DDR shouldn't be higher impact than waking, or on maniac jogging. If you are suffering more than that, then you are stomping or spazzing or doing something odd.

I've found that when i go out for a session, that after the first set, my feet kill... like.... a crippling soreness that doesn't let up... and after a couple minutes, it goes away. After that, I play a few songs on standard, and my feet have warmed up to it... You just gotta make sure not to be stomping too hard on your first handful of songs.
