It's because of the large number of items in the DB. It has to search through each and every one. This is why search was disabled previously.
It's probably about time for another prune... _________________

I dont care for the slowness, I don't use it because whenever I try searching for something, it returns 0 results. I tried searching for arcade in the search field under the marketplace forum, it found 0 results, but on the first page of the forum, there were about 3 threads with arcade in the title. That happened a couple of months ago though, I really havent tried using it since. _________________

Search works in a few seconds for me. I don't think pruning a huge chunk of the past is needed yet.
I've tested search out on a few short phrases. It won't find "yes" or "eh" or "arcade" but returns results for "fox". Why is that? |

It might be because it's finding too many results. How useful is a search on "arcade" anyway? _________________

I alywas thought no one used it for the same reason alot of people don't read the FAQ.
Basically because no one really pays attention to it. It took me forever to find out there was even a search link after I had found that there was one (same for the FAQ ). Albeit it is under the DDRFreak banner, I've always felt that the banner was too distracting.
[rant]I say put a FAQ and SEARCH button right next to the post button or when the postee clicks on POST, it takes them to a page stating: Have you read the FAQ? Have you tried to search for the topic?[/end rant]
Yeah that's pretty extreme. I'll just go back to my corner of the world now... _________________

There's a configuration file that allows you to enter in various "stop words" that make the search fail automatically. On the other hand, the word table itself is pretty large. |

The only problem is the fact that people arent going to bother reading it to start with and just click the box so they can go on their little postwhoring way. Good idea though. _________________

not a bad idea.
maybe you could have a list of the stickied threads on the create a new topic page, or a simple reminder to use the search button if you have a question. |

I did, 0 results were found. Arcade... i figure its more of an open word that the search engine would locate the threads. _________________

I like the Search feature and it works fine for me most of the time.
The only thing I don't like about it is it doesn't tell you what page the results are on so you have to search the whole thread. _________________

??? I don't think you can search by post. You can display by post. And I still don't think it shows what page the words you searched for are on. _________________

I'm no programming wiz, but I'm just not buying this "the database is too big" thing. The folks at The Straight Dope Message Board are doing just fine with their search.
There are currently 4,664,118 posts and 45,521 members. A search is carried out in seconds. What's the deal, fellers? |

There are many factors involved in server performance. Hardware configuration, software, etc. are all involved, and there's no way to say "if it works here, it shoudl work anywhere." Google searches come back in sub-second time, and works for tons of web sites. One major factor is the way search is coded in phpBB. It's not the most efficient thing. The second factor is that we don't automate our database optimization yet. The second factor will help some, but the biggest problem is with the way phpBB search works. _________________

The subject text of each post in the results page is a link to that post, which will take you to the page it's on. |
