I just started playing ddr and love it. However, I bought a cheap $20 soft mat with the game like 3 weeks ago and it is already freakin out. Phantom steps out the wazoo. So, my questions are 1-should I buy another cheap soft pad and mod it with flooring, etc. , 2-buy a good hard pad, or 3-buy a metal pad? The metal pads I've looked at on ebay are about $100-$150 and they do have polycarbonate panels...not acrylic. I'm just now learning and know that I'll never be as good as some people I've seen play, but who cares...I have loads of fun! I don't really want to invest a lot of money considering I don't have it, but I would consider spending the $100-$150 for a better pad. Also, what's the average life of a pad? I know it depends on use and how hard you use it, but any kind of estimate to help me choose would be great.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As far as I'm concerned there are only 3 pads other than the arcade one, the BNS XTreme, Red Octane's Ignition 2.0, and Cobalt Flux. Which one to buy depends on how much you're willing to spend. BNSXTreme is about $40-60, Ignition 2.0 is about $80-110, Cobalt Fluxes are in the $200+ range. They're all pretty good, but naturally, the higher the price, the better.

If you are god at building stuff build a metal pad with the help of the topic in the sticky's in this forum. If you were to get a soft pad buy a konamix one.

I dont know how long you are willing to wait for a new pad, but i am starting a company called padproject. i am making low cost alternatives to the metal pads on the market. They should be on sale within a few weeks, and will be priced at around $150. These are high quality pads, much better then cheap ebay metal pads.

I have a thread running conerning this, where i am asking for suggestions before i finalize the design here: http://www.ddrfreak.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=84715

(hopefully i wont get flamed for advertising)

uh..... i use a $40 pad, soft, and i have a nonslip material kinda thing under it, and it works fine, aside from when it doesnt respond sometimes which totally messes up my momentum. i would buy a better metal pad if i were u.

I have one more question. Should I get a pad with 6 or 8 arrows? I found a couple of metal pads on ebay, one with 6 and another with 8 arrows. The 6 is $98 and the 8 is $140. Since I am a noobie, which game and level uses all 8? By the way, the 6 arrow one has a 30 day guarantee. The 8, 14 day guarantee.

Thanks for the help!

Give us a link to the metal pads before you buy them. They, most likely, suck. And don't get the 8, it's just a waste of money.

When I see ebay feedback such as "product NOT as described & is piece of junk. Seller very unprofessional.", I tend to stay far away.

The above quote is referring to an auction for one of their dance pads.

I don't think it's really all that off-topic. E1.gif

Techno Motion, a Korean DDR/PIU knockoff, has an 8-arrow mode, but to my knowledge, it has no home version releases.

The reason this pad has eight arrows is primarily to appear better than the other pads. The lower-left and lower-right arrows map to Triangle and Square. Triangle is useful in DDR, as in some versions, you can hold it down to exit the menu or game you're in. Square is useless.

I wouldn't make a pad decision based on that though.

Isn't it cute the way there are two different pads being pictured on the 6 button version? Either way it is most likely a Cypher Games pad since that's the look of them as well as I recently dealt with that seller and the ignitions I got were Cyphers.

If you do decide on the 6 panel and do indeed get a Cypher Games pad then I highly suggest you be ready to mod it when you get it. I have two of them that I bought well over a year ago. I have all the modifications that I did detailed in my live journal.
