Hello out there fellow ddr freaks

A friend of mine recently sent a letter of appreciation to the head of marketing for Harmonix Music Systems. He was rather surprised by the quick response. The problem though was that he was told that the Existence of a third installment was in jeopardy due to lack of interest in
the series.

This spurred him to do what he thought was right. He and a I (Mr. Resetti) are making it our mission to increase awareness of this wonderful Franchise.

Not only am I attempting to organize a Promotion contest, but he is trying to promote the title at the upcoming Coast Con event here on the gulf coast.(coastcon.org)

Until we can promote the Title in a more tangible way he has created a petition that he will send to both Sony and Harmonix after he gets enough signatures. All that we ask is that you sign it and tell others who are a fan of the series to sign it as well. The petition can be reached at: http://www.ipetitions.com/campaigns/FreQ_3/

Also I suggest that you personally E-mail both Harmonix and Sony in addition to the petition.

Wouldn't, I don't know, buying the game promote the title in a more tangible way than an online petition?

Cool. Now if the series was actually good, we'd be in business. E7.gif

I posted the link to the petition on IGN's PS2 board. A lot of regs on the board are huge fans of the series so hopefully they will sign too.

I own both games in the series and really enjoyed both games

Amazingly well done online play, sharable remixes, the ability to do remixes PERIOD, a great library of songs (both popular and in-house), a HUGE range of difficulty, an almost-puzzle game feel at times, and, most importantly, very addicting gameplay...yeah, the series sucks.

I just signed. I didn't know that the series wasn't going to be continued, so I salute any effort to keep it going. Konami should take notes from SCEA and Harmonix.

Glad you agree.

Who DOESN'T want a game filled with angsty US music? WHO, I say? I'd like to meet this person.

Uh...have you played either game? Here's the list for Frequency.

Crystal Method - The Winner
Akrobatik - Exterminator
No Doubt - Ex-girlfriend
Orbit - XLR8R
Freezepop - Science Genius Girl
Dub Pistols - Official Chemical
Lo Fi All Stars - Lofis in Ibiza
Fear Factory - Frequency
Paul Oakenfold - See It
Ethan Eyes - Selecta
Powerman 5000 - Danger is Go
Orbital - Funny Break
DJ Q-Bert - Cosmic Assassins
BT - Smartbomb
Curve - Worst Mistake
Jungle Brothers - What's the Five-0
Funkstar De Luxe - Ignition
Roni Size &B Reprazent - Railing Pt. 2
Meat Beat Manifesto - Dynamite Fresh
Juno Reactor - Higher Ground
Toni Trippi - Motomatic
DJ HMX - Ibiza Dreamz
Symboin Project - Funny Dope Maneuver
Komputer Kontroller - Control Your Body
Symbion Project - FreQout
(and two more songs, in-house I believe)

I threw the angry/angsty ones in italics. Not that they're bad or anything. The rest is drum/bass, trance, techno, turntable stuff, hip-hop, etc., and all of it is very, very good stuff, better than almost anything I've heard out of any Bemani game, licensed or not...the Harmonix in-house stuff is bloody amazing. I'm sorry that it's not a Japanese game and that they're not singing in a language that you can't understand (and would dislike more if you COULD), but maybe you'll get over it someday.

Anyway, for those of you who DO enjoy the series...which songlist do you prefer? Frequency's or Amplitude's? (I go with Amplitude...Kimosabe, Shades of Blue, Cool Baby, and What's Goin' On all rock the house.)

Hey, I'll sign, Freq/Amp is one of my favorite music games series. I wouldn't say its a good as DDR, but it beats the snot out of most other rhythm games, like Gitaroo Man.

Yay Harmonix! biggrin.gif

I'm a student at WPI and the FreQuency series is really popular here. And on two different days someone from Harmonix has stopped by just to talk to us about games! I think thats a really cool thing for Harmonix to do. So yeah, buy their games. E1.gif (As if we weren't already!)

On each of these visits we had the chance to ask any question we wanted and someone asked "Will there be a sequel to Amplitude?" Someone also threw out the obvious title "Wavelength" as a suggestion. But Mike Dornbrook just said that in order for a sequel to happen Amplitude would have to sell really well. But by now we know that this sadly wasn't the case. E2.gif (This first meeting was about 11 months ago, when Amplitude had only been out for just a week.)

My question was accidentally funny. I asked "What do you guys think that you did better than any game in the Bemani series?" Right after I asked the question Mike and Damion Frank (lead graphics programmer) froze and turned to face other. Their reply was something close to: "Uh... well... we're big fans too!" But I persisted and one of them mentioned the lifebar and the system of checkpoints for providing breaks to keep a novice player from being too overwhelmed.

Then, a few months later, we all first heard about Keraoke Revolution. laugh.gif What seems to have happened is that Konami first contacted Harmonix about working on KR while they were still developing Amplitude. Harmonix initially declined, since they were still working on their one game, but took the project later since Konami was still interested in having them do it.

Which brings up another problem for the FreQency series. KR, I'm assuming, has already outsold FreQ/Amp combined. And since Harmonix is just an independent team and not a publisher they rely on a publisher (SCEA, Konami) to pay their paychecks and to do the publishing work. Konami, I'm assuming, won't pay them to make Amplitude 2 but they obviously did ask them to do Keraoke Recolution 2. So the success of KR kind of works against Amplitude in that the team, if they can still only do one game at once, is now locked* into Keraoke Revolution for as long as that series lasts.

*Locked in, unless they get another offer to make another game. Being an independent game developer means that you can only make the games that some publisher is willing to pay you to make.

But Konami does release games with low expectations just to please their fans! Thats what our first DDR game was, wasn't it? And Amplitude itself was one of these games. Frequency, despite great press, wasn't a success. But Harmonix' publisher, SCEA, loved the game so much that they decided to sponsor an unconditional sequel; at least because the game was so revolutionary.

And how could you not know that the series was dead? My first clue came when Harmonix put KR up on their website. My second clue arrived when they didn't announce a second title. My final clue came when I heard "Keraoke Revolution 2". I agree though, Harmonix does have some very sweet in-house music and if anyone in North America ever gets the job to do another beat-matching game it should be them. (Harmonix brand Beatmania drool.gif)

EDIT: Apparently revising this post 4 times wasn't enough to catch all of my errors.

Heh. I probably should have figured it out...I didn't do any research on how well the game did sales-wise, nor did I really make the whole Karaoke Revolution connection...I keep on forgetting that Harmonix is the development company and has to do what keeps them afloat.

Since you seem to know quite a bit about Harmonix and such...where is the in-house stuff done? Here or Europe?

Here. I know Chris Child and Freezepop are both local. Everyone has a URL to a personal page hidden somewhere in the game or in the manual.

http://www.chrischild.com is the only one I know off the top of my head.

(By 'here' and 'local' I mean the state of Massachusetts)

Yup, it's true. I'm not an authority, by any means, but I lived in Boston and met a gut who works for Harmonix. Unfortunately, due to poor sales etc. etc. the series has no plans to continue.

However, the good news is that Harmonix is an awesome company and I'm sure if there was a noticible effort by the games fans to let them know how they feel, they'd be happy to work on it. The only problem is getting Sony to agree.

They did work under contract for Konami to create the PS2 version of Karaoke Revolution, so their work on Freq/Amp certainly did not go unnoticed. Hopefully, we'll continue to see more innovative products from them in the future!

peace

Yeah, Amplitude's songlist is far superior. It actually caused me to track down Production Club and Quarishi CD's.

I have Frequency already and I'll be getting Amplitude in... 20 days and counting! (Birthday)

Even though I have Frequency, I have heard a lot of songs from Amplitude and seen videos of it and now I regret getting Frequency instead of Amplitude. Oh well, soon enough I'll have Amplitude and can play Super Sprode, Cool Baby, Robot Rockerz, Out the Box, Cherry Lips, and Synthesized.

Signed a long while back.. this series definetly deserves to continue, especially with the renewed potential of their union with Konami. I'm hoping the profit from KR is significant enough to back plans for a FreQ 3, if they're still inclined.. there's so much more music they could be exploring..

..I've always thought of this as the beatmania of console games, and there's no reason that kind of legacy deserves to end.

Oh, and song-for-song, my favorite tracklist is Frequency's. I LOVE trance/techno, and the underground nature of everything is very appealing. But the sheer awesomeness of the Harmonix originals in Amplitude definetly puts it on par with Frequency; and some of the licensed songs just plain rule as well. (Scariest unveiling of a boss ever: Slipknot.)

I'll keep my fingers crossed.. I'd want a sequel to this more than any rhythm game on the market.
