I'm amused by the fact that all the boxes of the DDR games and the DDR pads have women (in heels, no less) doing a dance pose, and I'm one of the very, very few girls who seems to play DDR with any regularity.

It might just be where I'm at, but I have yet to see another female at a DDR tournament. ¬_¬

I guess sexploitation sells...or something.

all the girly europop songs seem to indicate that ddr is trying to sell to females too, but i think guys are more likely to get into it just because:
1. they tend to be more athletic
2. they spend more time at arcades than girls

Yeah, heh. That is funny. I've never thought about the fact that they do tend to use girls in their marketing even though the majority of DDR players are guys. I do know several really good girl DDR players, though. I'm guessing that, yes, it is the sexploitation aspect at which they're looking.

You make it sound like it's a different woman for each box. It's the same woman each time, so I just picture her as the DDR mascot, rather than a suggestion that women would be more likely to enjoy DDR. If that were true, then I think Konami would've made it so the player 1 character is a woman and the player 2 character is a guy, rather than the other way around.
Sexploitation? Yeah, maybe. A lot of games do that though, so it doesn't single out DDR for me.

Actually, I thought it was a scientific fact that in general women are more dexterious than men, while men are stronger. So that should mean that women would be more athletic, and guys would be better at destroying the pad.

In that case, they might as well go all out and use a picture of two people having sex on the mat E4.gif

Last tournament I went to, there were at least 10 or so girls, prolly more. Guess it just depends on the area.

There's a ton of girls that go to my arcade and are serious about ddr, and an even bigger amount of casual girls who play on light/beginner.

Sexploitation is everywhere. There is nothing you can do to prevent it, so you'll just have to deal with it.

I'm not saying necessarily that it's a bad thing, but just that I find it amusing. It's hard to find girls who play DDR seriously, at least here in MA. Most of them are casual players who play on light/standard and it's hard to find any who are tournament quality, or want to be.

:3 Oh well. I'm sure the situation's different in say, California, where everyone plays DDR. XD

I'm not sure why that matters as far as the marketing of dance pads. If anything, they ARE targetting casual players. How many tournament players are going to bother buying anything other than a top-of-the-line pad anyway?

It is to hide the reality which is DDR:

Fantasy - when you play DDR, you will look like a beautiful girl in high heels...

Reality - when you play DDR, you look like a goofy, seaty guy wildly flailing your arms...

I enjoy being one of the few girls that actually plays seriously in this area, though sometimes I do get a bit of unwanted attention by the non playing crowd. disgust.gif

About the girl, I do believe it's supposed to be Lady and I've always seen her as a mascot to DDR, not some form of sex symbol to try to sell the game.

Sure, everyone gets a little bit of unwanted attention sometimes...and while the DDR Lady may not entirely be a sex symbol, I think there might still be some sort of inherent attraction for the males there, or at the least implicit message of "If I play DDR, girls will like me!" which is very often not the case. (That depends on how good looking you are on the pad.)

Unfortunately, in the upper echelons of DDR play, I still see an overwhelming amount of boys vs. girls, which kind of sucks. I'm not sure whether its because the amount of girl video gamers period (I have the feeling that a lot of DDR players are gamers in other genres of play) is rather low, or because of something else.

Hey, I'd buy the mat if it was of a quality grade! That might scare off more people than it would bring, however, unless it was a limited supply type-thing. Anyways, I'm thinking of making some really cool arrow designs to put under the plastic on my metal pad. Maybe I'll do that! I think my parents would get pissed, though. biggrin.gif
