|
|
I'm considering buying either a RedOctane Ignition 2.0 or a Cobalt Flux but I've been unable to find enough information to make my decision.
My first concern is about the durability of the Ignition pad. The Cobalt Flux is heralded is virtually indestructable, but I haven't heard the same said about the Ignition pad. In fact, I've heard the opposite. The owner of my local games shop doesn't stock it because of problems with breaking and defective pads. Will it work when I get and and still be working fine a few years hence?
My main concern about the cobalt flux is noise: will I be able to play on my CF in residence, or will it be too loud through the floor or even just the walls--even if I play with socks on?
Is the RedOctane quiet enough for appartment use?
My final concern was about play duration. I typically play for about two hours on my konami soft pad without too much of a problem. Is the same play duration possible with the CF? (I assume playing on the Ignition pad would be fine thanks to the foam insert... correct me if I'm wrong).
Thanks a million.
Mods: I was considering posting this in the sticky threads, but it's about BOTH soft AND hard pads, and in scanning through the first few pages I couldn't see the answers to my questions... sorry if this was the wrong place to post this. |

Well, the cobalt flux is extremely expensive, and I think it takes something like 3-4 weeks to ship. Everybody says it's the best pad, but when I played on it at a friends house it kinda hurt my feet(i play in socks). The noise that it made just sounded like you were tapping your foot on a marble floor. The ignition, however, is on around 100 dollars, and shipped instantly. You cannot play on a softer, nicer, more comfortable pad than the ignition 2.0, however if you play heavy mode over and over cankinda slip around sometimes. I say pocket the 200 bucks difference and get the o-so-comfortable-RedOctane Ignition 2.0
But thats just my advice. _________________

Yep, make sure to pocket all that money, because you will need it in about 4 months when the contact system is fully deteriorated. |

I had a ignition 2.0. These pads are great for about 2-3 months. Once I started playing on heavy it went to hell. The pad slid all over and the arrows started to function when I wasn't on them. Oh yeah, and it doesn't feel much like the arcade. Even though I never played on a CF I'm pretty sure it would be a better choice. |

It all depends on how much money and the risks your willing to take. I've had my 2.0 since christmas it still functions perfectly. It has i think a 2 month warranty on it and could be your better alternative depending on what your looking for. sure it's $100... but then again, you can buy inserts for it if it gets too beat up at low cost and pretty much no hassle on redoctane.com... I'm not sure about the cobalt flux but i think it has a lifetime warranty.... But if it breaks, then you have 3-4 week for you to send it to them, then they have to fix it, then 3-4 weeks back. You'd probally have to pay for the shipping too ( but not certain). I'm not saying it will break, but the fact that there is a possiblity. It's all about risks and what you want to go through. |

If that's accurate, then I think my mind is made up. I'd rather spend $300 now than $100 every time the pad breaks. Thanks again for the help.
If anyone else has an opinion, I'd still love to hear it. I'm not going to be ordering my pad for another few days yet. |

Go with the cobalt flux. You will not regret it. If you check out their website they have a nice forum that you can get lots of support from. I dont have one yet but plan in the near furture to get one. Vance the leading man i think provides all the support on the forum and i dont think i have ever seen soemone ship one back to them to be fixed. Most problems can be fixed your self very easily. |

The only problem I have with the Cobalt Flux is the lack of recesses for the arrows. I played on a Cobalt Flux once, and I kept missing the arrows because I could not feel where the arrows were.
I received a Redoctane Ignition Dance Pad this past Christmas. At first, the pad did not slide. After a month, the pad started sliding like any other soft pad. The UP arrow is also torn underneath. I'm glad EB Games had a one-year warranty for it. If I kill my pad before this coming Christmas, my pad will be replaced. _________________

I too, hate the CF. I decided to build my own after all the ones currently out on the market (even the actual arcade pads) did not meet my specifications.
I have the double metal pad I built (not even close to the ones that have plans online, I guess its kinda nice when I have a full metal/wood shop to work in) for my arcade machine (stepmania in a ddr cabinet, everything works, including the lighting and coin box.) And then I built a very nice 'plastic' (for lack of better explanation) USB pad for the PC.
My plastic one is so much more durable, comfortable and responsive than the CF it is rediculous (not to mention you dont need any troublesome adaptors to hook it up to the PC). I played on a CF and it felt like total garbage to me.
Dont get me wrong, if you do not have access to the resources that I am very grateful to have, then yes, the CF is prolly your best bet. I just knew I could do better, and ran with the idea. All my pads have some very nice LED lighting. I doubt I am going to make and sell them (especially the 'plastic' ones that are made out of lexan for the buttons, and then polycarbonite materials for the rest with a sturdy wood frame.) as they take me a few weeks to build each one, and I just simply have no time for that.
I guess what I am saying, is that if you have the resources, and know-how, design and build your own, they arent that hard. They tend to give you much more satisfaction, and also you know how they were put together, so they are easily fixed if something breaks. |

Since you asked about the noise, let me relate my experience: I bought a CF, but even playing in socks with foam cushioning placed underneath it, I still felt inhibited by the noise (I live in a 3rd floor apartment). Nobody complained, but I felt like I had to play too "soft-footed". Ultimately, I decided to leave the CF at a friend's house and play it there on the weekends, and stick to a cushioned softpad at home. |

I don't have the skills, materials or equipment to make a pad, unfortunately, so that's out--for now at least. RedOctanes rip, and other hard pads crack.
I figue a plywood modded soft pad would probably be just as loud as a CF (and ugly to boot), and I'm not even sure if I have the woodcraft skills to successfully do even that much (and I'd neet to get a soft pad. I'm selling Ultramix to my sister.)
Are there any other pads worth considering (as a high end pad)? _________________

IMO, the CF is just as loud as any other metal pad with shoes. I still think you should get the CF as it has a great 6 month warranty and works like a charm.
EDIT: BTW, it takes 2-3 weeks for the pad to arrive at your house, not 3-4 weeks for it to ship. Also, they pay for the shipping both ways as long as your pad is still under warranty,
