Ok, I just got my RedOctane pad in. Hooked it up with the included PC control box, and got the expected result of it reading the arrows as axis. Not a big problem, start+select+up fixed that like it should. Except after playing a song for about 30 seconds, it just turns that off, goes right back to the axis mode. Needless to say, I'd rather not have wasted $200 on a pad that's going to decide it just doesn't feel like getting along with my computer. Anyone have any idea why it's doing that?

ok, I'm going to assume you are using the dual joy box adapter (2 player blue one). it has a nasty habit of doing this, but I've found that doing a few things fixes it.

first, make sure that you plugged the pad into the adapter, and THEN the adapter into the computer. also, it seems to help if you either hook it up with your computer off, or if you restart after getting it plugged in. you may find that using a lower alpha (it hardly happens on alpha 8 for me) and turning off the auto map on joy change setting in the options menu helps. last, but definitely not least, make absolutely sure you put it in dance mode before you start up stepmania.

doing all those things, I've found that it happens at most once (very early on) while I'm playing. didn't happen at all at the DDR party I had last week, which lasted for hours. tell me if it remains a major problem, and I'll see if there are any system settings that I can talk to you about.

Well, I wasn't using any adaptor, the RedOctane control pad comes with an optional USB control box, and I was using that. I tried using it with the standard PS2 control box and the RedOctane 2-controller adaptor I got with the Ignition pad I bought my girlfriend for her birthday, though, and it worked perfectly. I'm guessing the PC control box is bad, but I'm going to try playing with the settings and seeing if I can get it to work.
