I've met many very good friends through DDR.
My friend played DDR and I asked her out but like always, I was turned down .
I lost about 20 pounds after 4 months of DDR. _________________

Playing DDR has introduced me to a lot of new people. I think if you play DDR, you already have at least 5 other things you have in common with another person that plays DDR. Having one thing that you both like to do can start a great relationship.
But sadly, people that do not play DDR, mostly girls in my case, can think it is pretty stupid and find it very unattractive. They have no idea what you are doing. In their eyes, all they see is some moron stomping on colored arrows to some wierd, funky music. Also in other cases, when you already have a friend, and they find out that you play DDR, they might not be your friend anymore because they think it's.....well stupid.
I think that if you play DDR, then you make friends who play, like, respect, or is tolerant of DDR. Other than that, playing DDR is a big turnoff _________________

My, such a sappy thread... sounds almost like the plot to some indie movie. Two people meet by not Internet, not singles bars, but DDR... heh.

But that is not to say that the idea is meaningless. As someone said on this thread, "not many girls play or even tolerate DDR." That is true. And do you know what is also true? You probably aren't very compatible with those DDR-player-haters, anyway.

I actually met one of my best friends by DDR, and am "courting" that special girl at the moment between songs. _________________

Well, I'd say that I've met some of my best friends playing DDR. For a long time i thought i was the only person that played very much where i live, until one day, i ran into a group of people playing on our local max2 (this was in may 2003). i talked to them for a while and then we started hanging out more and more, and now, even though we live an hour apart (they go to college in a different town) we still talk all the time, hang out when we can, and even co-mod our local ddr board. I've also met alot of really cool people throughout Oregon by going to tournaments. I remember going to my first one (in may 2003) and being all shy, because i'd just joined the messageboard and everyone was so much better than me, but now, i travel up to see them semi-often, and we all have a grand old time. I'd definitely say that DDR (and other bemani as well) has a positive effect on friendships, and i wouldn't trade any of the experiences i've had for anything. _________________

I see a lot of girls playing DDR actually... Problem is they are mostly fat or incredibly ugly... Or incredibly fat or ugly... Sometime both... But at anyrate my friend and I always make fun of people that would go on a "DDR date" like the phone conversation mainly. "Hey you wanna go out and uhh play DDR for a date? *click* ... Hello? You still there?" |

I sent the following email to the original poster:
Hey,
They call me ddrmom and I have tons of stories about the positive aspects of ddr. My 18 year old daughter started playing about three years ago and my two younger children followed soon after. I have been playing for about 2 years because it looked like so much fun that I finally joined in. My 18 year old met her current bf through ddr and they have been dating for close to 2 years now. We have all met so many wonderful people and have traveled through 5 states and over 20 arcades to play. We regularly attend tourneys, I have been a FS judge, and have we appeared on a local radio program about ddr. This is a wonderful game that is great for exercise and wonderful for meeting really cool people. I am now like the den mother of ddr and arrange entire weekends for the younger players with travel and such for ddr. My kids are pretty good players at this point, my 12 year old son plays 10 footers, my 14 year old daughter passes 9 foot heavy doubles songs, my 18 year old daughter placed 2nd in a FS competition and I am finally playing heavy-though mostly 6-7 footers. I think ddr is the perfect family activity! If you would like to hear more ddr stories like how I did a dance dance graduation party for my daughter, or how I helped run a major tournament in a hurricane please feel free to contact me.

I can't compete with that but my friend introduce to his sister and we been talking for about 3 months now she likes DDR and I often talk about all the time its just depending on the girl you meet wether she likes DDR or not. Shes got a pad currently working on getting the game. One of these day we are going to the arcade to play or just hang out at her house to play over all though I met great friends that play DDR and thank my friends for getting me involved with such a great game. Recently I convert one of my friends into a DDR player he says that he see arrows when he not playing so it begins. DDR 4 EVER |

How good are you at the game? It doesn't matter how crappy I'm doing in a song, I always get these wide mouthed, wide eyed looks from people in the arcade (girls included). They probably think I'm strange for being so good at it, but I don't think it offends them or anything.
And if someone stops being your friend because you play DDR, you need better quality friends.
I've met a good number of people playing DDR even though the places I usually play at aren't very popular. The majority of DDR players I've met are pretty friendly people.

ooo...
I meet someone through DDR...
We were freinds for a long while, then we dated... And things were great, but some HORRIBLE madness occured, and now we're apparantly not even on speaking terms. I told her to leave me alone cause she made a very hurtful mistake. now she's hatefull and apparantly reclusive and depressive, but who knows...
FUN STUFF EH?
all that crap and drama aside, I've made alot of really good friends through DDR. many that are the best of friends in many ways. hell, I just met somoene today at one of the local machines that I could see hanging out with in the future.
I still maintain that DDR is a great way to meet people. Anyone that's got the confidence to look that silly, probably has the confidence to just be themselves and have fun. _________________

Heh, I am probably one of the most newb'd out players here, with my whopping 2hrs of total game play ever. About the looking like a jackass to the opposite sex thing, I actually got a girls number last night as she was watching me (barely) play Pump it Up (no ddr available here ) I think its a confidence thing-- I don't really care who thinks I looks dumb, I just play 'cuz its really fun to me. She just thought I was 'cute' for playin it.....so just to kill that "all-girls-think-ddr-is-dorky" idea.
Also, yes my friends are the type to bust my balls about playing dance machines, but its fairly good-natured kinda stuff so I only laugh. It all comes back to the confidence thing again, if you are concerned with how you look to everyone else, it starts to limit your realm of action.
I strive to be actualizing, and I like DDR damnit! |

I met my DDR friend at the college we go to. He mentioned to me that he likes to play DDR and had a mix CD with some of the songs on it. I asked him if he had Butterfly on the CD and he did. After Winter break, I came back to school and went to his room and he had DDR Konamix and a dance pad. Since then, I practice DDR with him, whenever I can. _________________

That 42987 guy is one of my best friends right now. We're both real comfortable around eachother. He's like my big bro I never had. I met him about Octoberish.
My boyfriend (Fig) is also a member here and plays DDR on a regular basis. I met him mid July maybe, but we didn't get along until maybe 5 months ago. He is also a member of our three little best friends group. We all can talk about anything and everything and not really care. We're just all so relaxed around eachother it's wonderful.
They are definately two of my best friends ever and I met them both through DDR. _________________

I'm an older gamer (I'm 30) and have always been the primary gamer in the house. My parents lacked the interest that spawned in me by growing up in the 80's. Even though they didn't play, they always allowed the current consoles in the house, starting with the Atari 2600, then NES, SNES, and so on. Now that I'm married, games continue to be present in my house. I own all three current consoles with a variety of games for each. My wife has games that she'll play, like DDR and Animal Crossing, and my 4 year old son has games he plays, like Mario Party, Mario Golf, and SSBM.
So what does that have to do with DDR? A little over a year ago, I discovered DDR and bought a cheap home pad just to see if it was going to be fun. Well, I was instantly hooked, along with my wife. We played every day, not even thinking about being able to pass songs on Heavy mode. Now I have a Cobalt Flux and can pass 9's and some 10's. Soon, DDR came up in conversations around family and friends and now my mother, 2 nieces, and 3 friends have all become regular players.
I'm a high school teacher. As I started to lose weight, many of my staff members noticed and were intrigued when I would say I've lost 30+ pounds playing a videogame. Students have become interested. We are working on playing Fridays after school in our auditorium, using a projector and the full-size movie screen. Turnout so far has been spotty, but we were working through word-of-mouth with no advertising. We're going to promote this more in the weeks to come.
DDR spreads through the "I tell two people, then they tell two people, etc..." grapevine. We all know what fun it can be and how many different people we can interact with that we never would have talked to in other social circumstances. Overall, DDR has had a positive influence on my life and on those around me. |

DDR has greatly improved my social life. Before I started playing, I had only one good friend, but about a year and a half ago, when I started DDR, I met a lot of great people at local arcades and tournaments. I even met my best guy friend through DDR. I don't care for DDR as much as I used to, but I'm still grateful for the good things it brought to my life. |
