Hey all. I'm new here.
I'm a 19-year old college student and movie freak, and I enjoy DDR even though I'm an intermediate at best. But what I really want to do is film a documentary about the game; or, more specifically, about those who play it. My plan is to find people who play it religiously (I know some who do) and interview them about why they play, try to learn a bit the "subculture" of DDR fans, and probably throw in some history of the game, as well as get some kickass footage.
Does this sound like a good idea to you guys? I figure DDR fans like you guys would be the best to ask, and hopefully fine some suggestions or comments.
I spoke to one DDR-fan about it. He plays the game relentlessly, and yet I was surprised to talk to him and find that to him, it's really "just a game". As cheesy or overreaching as it may sound, I really think DDR can be seen as a way of expressing individual freedom, forging character through skillful accomplishments, and maybe even a form of rebellion (not to mention, of course, becoming a star for a few minutes). Does anyone else agree with these things or have any other observations about the game, or do you also think it's really just a game?
Basically, I'm looking for any suggestions or ideas or whatever that I can find. What would you want to see or hear in a DDR documentary?
Thanks! |

I would want to see a documentary that follows people that are competing in a national tournament. That would be awesome! |

As long as you get Yasu or Take in there somewhere I'll be happy. Just make sure you cover some of the Japan following, and relate it to the one happening in America, it might interest more people to see how the different cultures take to the game. _________________

I like how you mentioned pople being a star for a few minutes. DDR is the only game that I know of where I have seen TONS of people crowd around one machine. I have never seen this happen withy a Marven VS Capcom 2 machine and whatnot. Just wanted to point that out a bit
Also, what college? |

On that quote, If things fall together and some northwesterners go to B3^2, then I'm planning on attempting to do a video or at least a photo story of the experience (For i suck far too much to compete at that level).
To the actual topic, i'd love to make/be involved in a movie documentary, but make sure you acknowledge that the people you do interview have lives outside of ddr as well (unless they don't)..Have fun with it too. _________________

There's already a documentary that has finished production not so long ago. But it deals with the SoCal ddr scene. It would be cool to get an East Coast documentary. Interviews and high quality footage, along with a history of ddr, would help to make it great. |

Almost a year ago, I made a DDR documentary with most of the local players in my town, plus a couple good players from out of town. Some good things to include are:
Have the players in the documentary introduce themselves with their real names or DDR nicknames, whatever they prefer
An explanation of the game (and things like the bar, modifiers, etc.)
How long have they been playing DDR?
What are their accomplishments/goals?
Why do they play DDR?
Have a lot of footage of the players playing DDR and explaining different things about it
If possible, it'd be good to show footage of other Bemani games, like Beatmania IIDX
And one thing you can't not include... Bloopers! |

I'm in a video/film class as we speak and the thought of doing something like that crossed my mind. But then there was the question of copyrighting. Being new to film, I don't know a whole lot about copyright issues, but an interesting thing I was told was that, for example: you're shooting a movie/documentary about blah blah blah and a car passes by and you can hear a certain song playing from inside that car. From what I've been told, even that small fraction of time that you heard that song requires permission to use it in your film.
So I was wondering if that would apply to doing something like a documentary.....I mean, did those guys that did the soCal doc have to get permission or anything to use not only the music but the imagery too? That's gotta be a crazy buttocks hassle! _________________
