What would I need to do to legally play the songs from the DDR max2 arcade game in stepmania? |

So does that mean that if I get the soundtrack to the game I can then download the stepfiles and mp3s and that would be legal? |

What's the deal when I wanna play those songs on SM at a friends house? Or at a party? Or a con?
I don't think owning the soundtrack or the game covers that... do I have to pay royalties, and if I do, whom should I contact, Konami or some association comparable to the RIAA?
Are stepfiles copyrighted? Then the soundtrack wouldn't be enough to play the songs with SM.., |

That wouldn't solve the problem of playing the songs in public places. Owning the game which the songs came from is only enough for home-use in SM. |

OK when it comes to DDR:
Only the songs and the name Dance Dance Revolution is copyrighted.
So if someone really wanted they CAN create a clone of DDR name is something different and as long as they get the rights to the songs, can put any song on their clone as they want.
Stepmania is a DDR Clone for computer.
So...with that in mind when you buy the soundtrack of a mix or the game for a mix, you are have ownership of part of the copyright to the song, in that you can use the songs in any way you see fit as long as you do not illegally copy the songs and redistrubute them.
Think of it this way, you asked about having friends over to play, this is legal because it would be just like listening to the songs on the radio. Radio stations buy the CDs from artists or are given them for free and own them and are buy law allowed to broadcast them.
You letting your friends play is just like a radio broadcasting on the radio. Totally legal. _________________
