There have been several sightings of Pop-Ups, Spyware, etc. on DDR Freak.
This will now be the thread where you make reports of where they all happened.
First, make sure that you're not infected with spyware by downloading (any or all)...
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ - Ad-Aware (and if you like it, buy it, because you also get Ad-Watch [which is like Ad-Aware except with real-time monitoring]). Basicly it will search your system for Spyware (registry, hard drive, cookies, etc. etc.). Ad-Watch will do the same except it will do it while you're surfing (and it even has a Pop-Up stopper).
http://www.safer-networking.org/ - Search and Destroy SpyBot. This goes through your hard drive and searches for anything spyware related (links to the website, programs making contact to spyware websites, etc.) and lets you know. It will also alert you if you have other programs installed on your computer that may conflict with S&D.
http://edit.companion.yahoo.com/config/slv4_page?.p=pubtry - Yahoo Companion Bar. This is better if you have a Yahoo account, but this has a really cool pop-up stopper (you hold CTRL if you want to let the pop-up get through).
http://toolbar.google.com - Google Toolbar. Same as the Yahoo! bar but with some minor differences (you don't need any type of account to use it).
Hijack This - Awesome program, though you shouldn't use it unless you really know what you're doing or you know in advance the name of the file you're looking for (added by Xhad)
[If you know of a program that might help, please PM Me.
After that, if you want to report a Pop-Up, Spyware alert (that you may have gotten from DDR Freak), etc.
Please post the URL that you got it from, The Pop-Up link, and a screenshot (if able). If you have a pop-up stopper program that has a log, the log would also help.

I second this. I was gonna post it when I saw Milton recommending the Y! bar, but that thing is intrusive all on its own. The Google toolbar is small and provides useful data, a nice interface to the Google search engine (which is vastly better than Yahoo's), and no overt advertising (which having the Y! bar precludes, since you need a Yahoo account).

While I agree the google toolbar is far greater then the yahoo one, Yahoo and Google are one and the same. They're both the same technology, and Yahoo uses Google to perform it's services

I apologize for not having my pop up blocker enabled at the time, but I can at least give you a screenshot from the MOST ANNOYING POPUP EVER.
It caused a full screen popup which was then covered by another screen stating 'please press enter'. This new screen did not allow me to do ANYTHING until I pressed enter (despite my attempts to end the task through ctrl-alt-del and kill the window through alt-f4).
I was able to close the original popup after that, but a task remained running in my taskbar claiming to be 'Windows'. This brought more popups through time. The only way to get rid of it was to end task on it.
Just now, I opened a new browser window where my typical default page is yahoo and it had changed it to some other site with about 5 popups and that dang Windows taskbar thing again.
*runs ad aware to try to kill it*

yeah, those ads are annoying. i just downloaded Google popup blocker last week and it has been doing wonders for me!

On another note.
People have been telling me how annoying this new pop-up is, so I hope it get's resolved soon.
I decided to throw another alternative into the mix. Mozilla Firebird. Lean, Mean, Tabbed Browsing machine.
I won't hype and holler about the features, I'll just say that I've never seen this ad for one reason.
In-line pop-up blocker. Works like a charm.

haha, I was afraid of what would happen if I pressed enter when it told me to, so I just ctl+alt+del and went offline.
Can never be too careful about those pop-up ads  |

Because the occasional banner advertiser we use thinks that they're being smart by adding a popup to their banner. Little do they know how incredibly annoying they're being and how fast they're going to lose the site's business by doing that.

Should've stuck with Firebird. Add the Ad blocking scrip from http://texturizer.net/firebird/adblock.html to your userContent.css file. No pop up and no ad. The only downside to this is that the links at the top of DDR Freak's page "about | ddr | forums | etc." appears kinda funky. They don't align up horizontally but sometimes vertically... Can this be fixed? |

That's a rendering issue. I believe it only happens with that AdBlock extension you use, so, the only fix would be to not use it. If nothing else, you can use something that doesn't remove the entire ad, just hides it (ala. 'Flash: click to view' type of extension).

You guys might want to do a virus scan if you haven't.
Every time I've visited the site when a pop up occurs, my McAfee tells me I've been infected with a Trojan called JS/Noclose. I just have to do a virus scan of my C:/ drive and clean the infected file (entitled Media(10003e.gen) or something like that), and it's fixed. I'd imagine those of you who have experienced this also have the virus as I've never clicked on any of the ads nor have I accepted yes/accept on any of those pop ups asking you to install something. It always occurs immediately after the first pop up comes up. |

Pop-ups aren't caused by viruses 90% of the time. Most virus-scanners won't even pick up any spyware program (gator.exe, etc.) but the Spyware programs listed above will.
Some virus programs, however, are spyware programs and will get caught by Virus Scanners.
Also, I've encountered a new type of pop-up (I've tested it on my own personal website and it went straight through my pop-up stopper, etc.), that uses java applet to run a pop-up. Most IE Pop-Up stoppers won't see it as IE but a component of IE (*shrugs*) and let it pass through.

Well, I'm obviously getting the virus from this site because it's not just a coincidence that my virus scanner immediately tells me I've been infected with said virus every time I get a pop up here (which has only been three times in the last week). Unless of course you are saying that this spyware is just getting caught by my virus scanner and saying it's a virus.  |
