Does anyone else find it funny that the arcade machines have a sticker on the side that say "For Use in Japan Only." Is it possible we could be breaking international laws as we happily hop around on the wonderful machine?

But ya know, at schoola they always watch videos that say something like "It is prohibited to show this film in a public audience." Does that mean it's illegal to show to kids in classrooms without permission?

I doubt they will do anything about it.

Konami knows they are in america, especialy stores that do yugioh tournoments. they just say that they cant hold official tournys for ddr.

Actually, if you look at the bottom of the disclaimer that appears on the screen every now and then, it says "unless given special authorization by Konami", or something like that.

I've got my theories about this. Basically DDR machines always contain a fair few licensed songs on them. Licenses have to be bought to redistribute those songs, as the name implies, but Konami originally only bought those for Japan, so it can't redistribute those songs, and hence those mixes, outside of Japan.

Of course, Konami knows damn well there's Extremes and such outside of Japan. The importers buy the cabinets, and Konami makes a profit and don't ask questions about where the machines wind up. The song licensors probably don't particularly care and everyone's happy. Except for you and me because these machines cost a bomb to import (the stage itself weighs like 100kg, the whole assembly is probably close to a metric ton. Judging by what Myst has said, this needs several months of transport by ship and costs ~$3000 just for transportation) so few places, in the UK at least, have them.

After all, if you're Konami and can just turn a blind eye to all this, why bother forking out for international licenses and having to set up contracts with people in the US to make your machines when you can let the importers do it for you? Get someone else to pay up the behind instead of you, that's the way of the corp

I always made jokes about that "Japan Only" message on the DDR machine. It wouldn't be here otherwise.

I'd actually like to know what KoJ thinks of this, and if it really is illegal to own and play Jap. DDR mixes here in the US (Or any other country for that matter).
I mean, we haven't heard of any music artists or anything complaining about the importing of their music over to another country, or Konami saying a word on this issue.

actually KoJ isnt really making money off of DDR systems in the US. Most Extreme versions of bootleg copy's made in taiwan. I think there are only around 1500 extreme machines that are officaly licensend in the us
