I am addicted to DDR, and have been for the past year. I am able to beat every song on Max2 (except for MaxX Unlimited) with A's and B's on heavy.
Now here's my problem; I cannot AA for the life of me. No matter what I cannot AA a friggin song. I went on light, and played Firefly (1 footer) and only got an A! I had like 25 greats out of around 80 or so arrows!
I go to the arcade on an average of every other night, each night playing nonstop for about 3 hours. Playing things from Oni (naoki standard is the only one i play, only get to 3rd stage at most then fail) to Max 300 until i fail.

So do I continue to go spending lots of money at the arcade (about 5-10 each visit) or do I save up for the highest quality DDR pad I can find? I found a nice Cobalt Flux one for about 300 or so, but I only have around 100, and not many ways to get money.

Who has played on one of these pads? I plan to hook it up to stepmania on my computer and play. will that get me better? What if I spend weeks playing on that pad and go back to the arcade? will i suck at the arcade because I got used to the home metal pad?

I could use suggestions. Thank you.
(sorry if i posted this in the wrong forum)

Personally, I think you should save up for a Cobalt Flux and once you get one of those like I did, the AAs and even the AAAs appear outta no where, they just do. It's creepy laugh.gif As for practicing at the arcade, realize this, the pads there have more wear in one day than most people's pads have in a month, as the hundreds if not thousands of people that play on there and the people that walk across them to get by, so the timing of them is going to be off compared to well taken care of ones at home. One more hint, do Days Go By on Heavy for an hour, you can AA that if you can A any song thumb.gif Oh, and try Captain Jack on Standard at the arcade, that's a good one to AA. thumb.gif

Well now that Cobalt Flux is an option I need some more insight.

I hear that HomeMade Pads > Cobalt Flux. Mainly because you can set them how sensitive, and how sturdy you want them, and you can repair them easier. Well I have absolutely ZERO mechanical skill, meaning even with the most simplified instructions I probably would get confused. But my dad has a little experience on the type of thing. Should I spend around $130 for a homemade pad, or spend $350+ for a CF (including shipping costs) for an out-of-the-box reliable CF?

Well, quite rarely, some people on this board might build one for you,
of course for 150+ dollars.
ONce again, that is very very very rare, try asking in the "My home Built pad" thread

CF pads are a little pricey, but if you got the money, and you don't have any mechanical skills, then go for it, I say

Bah! I just spent the last three days AA a bunch of songs (for the first time!) on my 10-month old BNS pads. (Well, _pad_... one of them only has three working buttons left; it makes trying to AA doubles sad :(

The vinyl over each button is torn; the rear button on three sides so it flaps around, and the front one on the bottom edge so your toe gets caught in it.

::sigh:: A few more paychecks, and I'll make my own hard pads...

Also, realize that the timing in the arcade (and on import mixes) IS tighter: what counts for a perfect at home might only be a great in the arcade. (Still, a good arcade would be able to maintain the pads properly.)
