If you have people pay for some "extra features" ( no banners or ads, faster speeds, more videos, etc. )
Then give them like a special tag like "Elite Member" or "Paid User" with a different color foot.
Check out www.digitallyimported.com for what I pay to get Premium User.
*don't flame please, this is just an idea to make it easier for JDogg to pay all the bills* _________________

Hmmm, in principal that doesn't sound like a bad idea. However in reality I'm not too sure about that. I can see how one might go about doing it but it would take a lot of things and we don't know if people here would be willing to pay for something like that. Who knows though, maybe people would be willing to do it. _________________

Not even addressing any other possible points about it (not saying that it wouldn't possibly be a good idea, but it depends on a lot of things), naming people who pay "Elite Member" would be a terrible idea. People think they're elite enough when we aren't telling them they are _________________

paying to be on a forum?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!??!?! Sounds kinda stupid to me but that's just me. Sure J-Dogg and the crew are always looking for moolah to keep the site up but that's kinda overboard. _________________

In theory, I guess this would work the way paid accounts on LiveJournal do. Extra features, etc.
In practice, though, I don't *think* phpBB2 would allow for it, would it? I don't know what extra features you'd be able to add. _________________

We've actually discussed this before on the mod forum, and although it's a good idea, there's just not the market for it at this forum... plus, we don't really have a whole lot to offer in the way of subscription bonuses.
As for it not being a good idea: I subscribe to the ArsTechnica forum. They have a LOT of special features there that benefit their paying customers, including web hosting space and download areas for their members.
It's a great idea, but we just don't have the content to implement it, I believe. _________________

I didn't know Ars added extra features. That's pretty cool. Back when I heard about the paid-member-status, it just added "et Contributor" to your title.
I know one bonus feature that a lot of people here would appreciate - Avatar and Banner hosting.
Another one which could be useful would be a scoring database. You could either submit a Link Data file, or just type in scores manually. This would eliminate the need for "My catas I've beaten" sigs. Sure, the data could be falsified, but if you're so insecure that you need to tell people you can AAA more songs than Yasu, then you're probably not willing to pay $X per month/year to do that in just this one place.
I've been wanting a US Internet Ranking system for a long time anyway. _________________

It's "et Subscriptor", but they have other things, too, like Custom Titles and such. You can also post in the Lounge and Velvet Room ONLY if you're a subscriber.
Here's what Ars offers it's subscribers. DDRFreak just doesn't have the content like that... besides, the vast majority of the people that use the site/forums wouldn't want to pay or are too young to pay anyway. _________________

No, please don't... I remember what happened when there were SSR members around... People were getting pissed off at them, calling them ass kissers and suck ups. You name it and we were called it. Not that I care what I was called or people said to me about it, just outgrew it I think. _________________

Don't have the content? I think that's a bad excuse really. I think we could have whatever content we need to sell this idea. _________________

The funny thing about SSR was that the first wave of people (let's see...ClayOK was first, and then JustJeff and I were made SSR at the same time) didn't really get any crap. At least, I've never heard either of them say they received any threats/flames, and I sure didn't. Later on people did though.
But anyways, I think that if we WERE to have some sort of new title, it would have to be a "pay to receive" type thing. If we were to base it off of quality posts (like we used to) then it would probably end up like it did before. But if we were to have it be something like "Pay $5, get the title of 'Brown Noser'" then people couldn't argue that someone got the title by doing anything but giving me (...I mean us ) $5.
But that doesn't mean that we SHOULD do it _________________

I think it was because You can clay became mods (as did some of the other original ssr members IIRC). Then we switched forums - everything was fine for a few months - ssr came back, and people saw it as a 'pre-req.' for becoming a moderator, of course that wasn't the case but you know how people can be.
- Nobody likes the wanna-be mods.
- Nobody wanted to miss their last chance to get a dig at someone who they thought was going to become the man.
- People thought the only way to become ssr was to suck-up (nobody likes suckups)

ONTOPIC:
I'm all for the concept of paid membership to get rid of banner advertising, faster access, etc. Title has never been that important to me, and I'm still of the opinion that creating extra titles above and beyond the Mod/normal user/Noob levels is probably a bad idea - but if someone was paying to be a member I think some sort of recognition is in order.
We should make it very clear that paid members wouldn't recieve any special treatment from moderators/admins. Post crap and you'd still get banned. _________________
