I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't own webspace, or have any old open spot where they can stick up their avatar. I myself have my own signature avatar picture, and it's bumming me out that I can't put it up here. I've seen other forums just like this one that have this feature, so why can't it be added here?

the forum is too big and it would use up wayyyy too many resources

www.freewebs.com is your friend its free and its stable with remote leinking and no annoying pop ups or splash banners

For future reference, you can find a lot of pertinent details in the Imaging forum. There's a few stickied threads there about avatar/banner creation and hosting which can provide helpful information to new members.

If we allowed everyone to upload their own avatar (like we used to) then our bandwidth bill would increase by quite a sum of money.
