First of all, what does Sakura (桜) translate to in Japanese?
Anyways, I've just noticed something about the character; it can be "divided" into three separate pictographs (people of Chinese or Japanese background will know what I'm talking about): tree, water, and woman.
And by looking at the background of Sakura during gameplay, you'll notice those exact three elements. Also, the way 桜 is written, the woman pictograph is 'underneath' the water pictograph, possibly indicating a reflection from the water (again, like in the background during gameplay)?

I believe it means Cherry Blossom

Yes, it means Cherry Blossom and is also a girl's name.

Interesting observation, but even though no one can really be sure what the artist was thinking, I think you're reading a bit too much into it =-) The background also has two parts with a green vortex and two with 3D outlined blocks.... but there are Kanji radicals for neither vortexes, nor 3D blocks

Darnit I cannot find the thread that had everything you ever wanted to know about Sakura. I woulda linked to it. Damn the search function for being down. Damn my laziness to not look beyond three pages.

(Note: this is not the complete form of the original Chinese character "Sakura". The two characters on the upper right corner, dipicting "shell", should have two strokes in the middle.)
Since using Japanese (or Chinese) characters seems to be impossible here, I'll try my best to describe the origin of the Kanji "Sakura" with mere words. Bear with me, this won't be easy.
The Chinese version of the word "Sakura" which the Japanese borrowed from contains the root "Wood" to the left and "Newborn" to the right. It is a common word composition type where two Chinese chracters: one bearing the meaning of the word and the other, the sound of the word. In this case, the Chinese sound for "Newborn" is the same as that for "Sakura".
The "Newborn" chracter contains two "Shells" on top (one shell also dipicting riches, two shells is a Kanji meaning "Precious"), and the character "Woman" at the bottom. This is another composed word: object precious to a woman - newborn child.
When the Japanese adapted the Kanji, out of laziness they simplified the character so that the two shells becomes a simplified 4 stroke pattern (It does NOT dipict water), effectively reducing 14 strokes to draw the two shells down to 4 strokes. The rest of the character remains the same, producing the Sakura character that you recognize today.

Ok, what I did for that is set my coding to UTF-8, then submit. For some reason, the forums here default to "Western" ISO-8859-1 encoding. Bah, they should upgrade to UTF-8. Hell, the Japanese should use UTF-8. Shift-JIS is stupid.
If you set your encoding to UTF-8 (Unicode) and have your fonts set up right, you'll see the kanji for "sakura."

Sorry, her name is not Sakura.
The kanji on her cheek just show the name of the song, like many other songs. You can see that there is no kanji on her cheek in BGA. Why the kanji was put on her cheek? Maybe it was only a coincidence. Or maybe the artist thought it cool. 
In fact, she is Alice, who has appeared in DDR5th and even not a Japanese.

BTW: Chinese characters (called Kanji in Japanese and Hanzi in Chinese) really make many beginners confused. You can type "about:樱" in your IE aDDRess bar to see the original character in Chinese and type "about:桜" to see the adapted(simlified) character in Japanese. |
