How does Stepmania convert DDR to PiU/PPP/whatever?

Hey, just like it says in the topic...It occured to me last night when i was playing PiU on Bag (lol x___X Ow...it burns more than it did on DDR)...and uh..yeah...I was wodnering how it converted the steps..consider PiU and PPP have 5 arrow/pads...

Also the same with playing it on solo...The songs don't have solosteps built it...so how does it know what to put?

And on another quick note...would it be possible soemhow to make it so that the middle button on Stepmania: PIU is auto pressed, and th rest are up to you...so you could like use a regular soft mat with the square, circle triangle and X...or would i have to just use the full autoplay feature?


And i know the buttons aren't the same size...but it's just an idea...this way I wont have to buy 2 PIU pads and tommygun mod those as well as my DDR mats..

They are auto-gen steps, meaning they are auto generated. I am not sure how it really works, but I am guessing that it just follows the pattern.
