|
|
Okay, let me start off by saying I'm a heavy technical player. I can't freestyle for crap.
I just recalled taking an exam for your brain, and it chooses which side of your brain is dominant. Right brain is dominant = more creativity, less logical, and Left brain is vice versa.
Well, in the test I was 81% left-brained, so that was a start. My friend is heavily right-brained, I remember. He can't pass anything higher than 7 feet, but his freestyling is impeccable. He can DANCE.
This brings me to think...do you think this REALLY has an impact on gameplay? Would someone as left-brained as me be able to overcome and learn to freestyle? I don't think I'll be able to anytime soon... _________________

I think in the long run you might be right. But freestyling isn't necessarily creative. You can do really cool moves that you have exactly emulated someone else doing. That would be technical. I think actually pulling off the moves is using the left side of your brain, but actually planning out a routine or something is more right side oriented.
My family has labled me "the artistic guy" and so yeah, you would think I use the right side of my brain mostly. So if I use the right side of my brain moreso than my left, that would meen I am better at freestyling that tech play? Wrong. I'm mostly into tech play, and I concider myself pretty good at ddr.
So I don't think applying that logic to ddr is going to give you an accurate outcome. _________________

What is really psychological is people saying they can't dance. Saying you can't dance, is saying that can't move to a constant beat, which I know everybody can. Some people have the mind set that they can't dance, when all u need is practice, and inspiration (freestyling). But I think that right brain may have something to do with it in creativity _________________

Im not good at freestyling but I am pretty damn good at technical. I am left brained beacuse I am highly logical and not really that creative. |

I think it is really just a level of skill. Once I could pass everything from a 1 footer to a cata, I would go back and throw a trick or basic song inbetween my maniac songs.... Look for patterns, spin and have fun, learn Butterfly spins, now when i see certain patterns, I know how to spin to them and make it look good....it all comes down to practice. _________________

What do you want to look like? Dancing is dancing. All dancing is is moving your body to a rhythm, once you have basic rhythms down, grooving to a beat is easy. If you want to try something, go play Para Para or Dance Maniax for a few hours. Both of those are upper body music games. Seriously though, an even simpler way to do it is to play some music out of your home stereo and try and move to the beat. That way its free, you can do it privatly (so that if you do look like a fool at the beginning no one is watching you) and usually its pretty entertaining. There's .02 more from me _________________

well as a newbie to freestyling i think that this whole more creative side of the brain is defenitely wat controls freestling. ive PA for about 2 years and that probaly takes the more practical/technical side of the brain. but when u freestyle there is no set way so its all about how creative u r. so to answer your question, if u dont start tapping in to your creative side then the only freestyling u can do is the is the freestyling thats already been done i.e. hand drop, knee drop, etc...... |

//walks in, puts two cents into the machine, and starts talking
On a purely neurobiological note, I'd have to argue that it involves both sides of the brain, simply because each side of the brain controls the opposite side of the body.
Seriously, though, I think that freestyling mainly utilizes the right side, since that's the creative side. It's not a matter of taking information in, processing it, and doing what your experience tells you what to do with it, like technical play. But, if you're looking for whether or not your dominant side determines if you're a good freestyler, I'd say no. You can be very logical and have the natural skill to freestyle. _________________

Umm... yeah it is. Your brain remembers the arrow position, it recognizes where it is on the pad, and your experience tells you what move to use. Seriously. _________________

(clears throat)IMO freestyling is a combination of both sides of your brain. it requires logical and creativity to become a good one. i mean sure you may be able to dance or what not but do you have the ability to make a crowd do "oooohhh" and "ahhhh". Its hard to say that ddr gameplay is sorted into different sides of your brain . (damn that sounds funny) becasue im a good freestyler (which is what im known for) but im becoming a good PA player as well. PA though is mainly just focus and strategy but at the same time if you have rhythm or not. (walks off of the pedostool and throws hands up like nixion) |

I think the majority of freestylers just FS because they aren't good at/don't want spend alot of time getting good at technical playing.
This is why I hate most freestylers. They don't have the technical skills needed to do a decent routine, so they lower them selfs to kneedrops and matrix walking. They could atleast memorize some of the steps so they aren't looking at the screen the whole time. It's not a matter of what side of the brain you use, it's the dedication you put into whichever style of DDR you play.
I respect the freestylers out there who put out excellent routines with originality and charisma, but the people who think hitting the left arrow with their right foot is freestyling make me sick. |

No, I said most freestylers don't have the basic skills needed to freestyle.
They just see someone do a routine and try to freestyle right off the bat, instead of just playing normally and learning how to move on the pad which is why they tend to do bad routines.
I'm racist? Cool . |

I'm known to do highly stupid, yet creative things. I also have much mroe fun freestyling then teching. It seems to come naturally to me. I guess I'm....right brained? _________________

I see where you could misinterpret this and see these as different, but they are the same thing in my book.
Besides that, my previous posts had the same point except that I elaborated more in the first post on the things they do that annoy me(matrix walking, knee drops, ect.) |
