After a certain amount of time, Stepmania CVS freezes on me and I MUST restart my computer. That resorts to me using 3.0 final all the time.
Can someone tell me whats wrong? I think its sound related?! _________________

You're not telling me anything about your computer, so I have no idea. Post the "info.txt" file in the SM directory. |

If it involves computers, I can fix it!
...but you have to give me information on your computer first.
I'll try my best:
1. Stepmania monopolizes the CPU in windowed mode. Play using fullscreen.
2. Turn on "Show Stats" in Machine Options. If the FPS counter constantly exceeds 60, then set the Refresh Rate to 60. _________________

Here is the important stuff..
Compiled Wed Jun 11 21:51:46 2003 (build 13377)
Windows 5.1 (WinXP) build 2600 []
Memory: 255mb total, 618mb swap (322mb swap avail)
Primary display driver: NVIDIA RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro
Video Driver Information:
Provider : NVIDIA
Description : NVIDIA RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro
Version : 2.9.4.2
Date : 5-3-2002
DeviceID : pci\ven_10de&dev_0028
Sound device 0: SB Live! Wave Device, 5.10, MID 1, PID 100
Sound device 1: Modem #0 Line Playback, 5.0, MID 1, PID 81 (INACCURATE)
DirectSound Driver: Primary Sound Driver ()
DirectSound Driver: SB Live! Wave Device (emu10k1m.sys)
ID: {bd6dd71a-3deb-11d1-392ba8}
DirectSound Driver: Modem #0 Line Playback (emulated) (WaveOut 1)

It runs smoothly, everything is perfect, there is just an annoying freeze at a random time. _________________

StepMania (and just about all games) "monopolize" CPU regardless of how you play. Most games are faster in fullscreen for technical reasons (you get hardware page flipping in fullscreen).

Ew, no. Set the refresh rate as high as your monitor can go; only lower it if you really have to. 60hz sucks.
I don't know what either of these suggestions have to do with his report of freezing, though.
If your system is crashing, then it's almost certainly either a hardware or driver problem. I don't see anything unusual about your hardware. |

Yeah, a couple CVS versions had that problem. Did you try both Direct3D and OpenGL renderers? Maybe one will work better for you. And your video driver looks old. When's the last time you updated it? I don't know if they're still updating for TNT2 anymore...
One of my machines is a Dell Inspiron with PIV-1.7GHz and Mobility Radeon 7500 and CVS will occasionally have random freezes. For this machine, I still prefer 3.0Final. All other machines (PIII notebook, AMD desktop), CVS is awesome.
One thing you could do (which doesn't solve but makes it more manageable), is to change the setting for the number of preloads for the background animations. Since you have an old video card, I assume it's a 16MB card. Also, are you running in 16-bit or 32-bit color and with what textures? I would stick to 16-bit, 16-bit for TNT2.
And do run in fullscreen. It does make a difference. |
