A few months ago, back in 2002 on the weekends, I went to the mall that had an arcade with my friends for the first time (since Im a freshman at high school). I showed them how good I am. They were amazed how good of a DDR player I was (even though I couldnt beat Max 300).
On monday, I had music class. Since my teacher barely teaches anything and just talks to to class about her morning, which are really funny. So, I listen. But, one of the friends who went to the mall was in that same class as me. She pretty close to me (in seats I mean). Then, she says in exact, "You're good at that game! Can you teach me how to play?" I said nothing but uhh.... Why?
1. I didnt know how to teach. As a matter of fact, Id make things worse.
2. I had a crush on her. And by that, I get shy.
If that ever happened to you, would you do it and how would you teach her? |

i'm no expert, but teach her like she was a 4 year old, cuz she knows NOTHING about it. As for the crush, use your charm (and make sure to show off, but not exessively)!!!!!! _________________

Most definitely man! Don't ever pass up an opportunity to socialize with
someone you've got a crush on...the more you get to spend time with her,
the more comfortable you'll be which means you'll be less shy
As for how to teach her...if your arcade's got EXTREME, then that would be
the best machine to have her practice on since there's the added BEGINNER'S
MODE now. If she's got a good sense of rythym and coordination,
I'm sure she'll pick up fine. To start, have her watch the demo of the
game (you know the one where it shows the cartoons showing you how to
play) and explain to her "the ropes" (freezes, jumps, etc.) as to how DDR works overall.
Then the next step would be to have her watch you play a beginner, basic, or standard
difficulty game, depending on how fast she'll catch on. Be sure to have her undivided
attention and have her watch you play (this might help a little on that "crush" issue ).
Another helpful tip is to have her mimic (or "shadow") what you do on the
other pad as your playing, so that she's not actually playing just yet. This
way, she can get the sense of how the pads feel when she plays and
knows how to mimic her body movement to yours (don't forget to make
sure she watches you ). Then, when she's ready, play a game
with her or let her tryout one on her own. Always find ways of explaining
to her how to play to make it easier and more fun of course! Most
importantly...be patient, positive, and encouragable! GOOD LUCK! |

Answer to three out of ever five of life's questions =-D
(you'd better read it too... took me nearly 15 minutes to find the comic I was looking for =-X
As for some advice on teaching.... It depends on how much she's already played the game. If she's never played before, then remember, DDR is pretty easy to learn, and thus easy to teach.
Try taking her to the arcade, then show her the basics. 1~3 foot on light to start off with, play singles one after the other (you play a song as she watches, then have her play a song as you watch... doubles isn't the greatest for learning, as paying attention to your partner will make you fail).
Also, be sure to read up on the DDRFreak.com's beginner tips and let her know if she keeps putting her feet in the middle of the pad and such.
http://www.ddrfreak.com/library/tips-beginners.php
If she's played a bit and wants you to help her improve her game, then just try out what I said above, only with harder songs.
Keep in mind, this game takes time to get good at. Have patience when she plays. Even if she fails an easy song, remember, it's NOT easy if you don't have much experience playing it! And even if you don't give her any mind-blowing skill-boosting advice, the mere act of playing the game will make her better.
As for shyness, that's a toughy to tackle sometimes. Some things to consider:
* Go with some other friends of yours, as there's safety in numbers =-)
(but note playing singles with other people can get irratating).
* Remember, DDR can is embarrassing to many people when they first see it. Use that to your advantage. She will probably be more nervous than you when she first gets on the stage.
If it were me, personally, I'd go for it =-)
And in case you get stuck, remember.... Piro said "yes"....

Dude you should seriously go for it and teach her. This will give you mad time to let off some of your charm. Be sure to compilment her and give her advice while she's playing! Good Luck |

I've been trying to teach DDR myself.
The problem is that in the early stages of learning DDR, it's just a matter of becoming comfortable with arrow reading and there's nothing to do besides practice.
I had a thought that learning Stepmania before true DDR would eventually make you a better player because you would learn the rhythms and songs and become comforable with arrow processing first. Then you would go play true DDR and you would have enough time to figure out how to step most efficiently (ie rotation).
Shyness.... When I play DDR, my shyness actually gets turned off because I get so juiced from DDR. When fat <had to remove this swear work> ignorant rednecks are watching me play making their idiotic comments about how it's not real dancing, I'll walk up to them and ask if they're waiting for me to finish so they can play next. Just play a lot with her and let the sweaty DDR love bring you together.
She might want to wear a hair tie too! _________________

sure, teach her. just kind of show her how to do it and just guide her along a little if she needs help. play games with her and pick stuff she can handle and advance from there. give her tips every once in a while. if she gets frustrated, take a break, be supportive, and stuff like that. be sure to encourage her.
and don't be a show off. that can come across as being pompous and girls don't like pompous guys like that. you might make her uncomfortable by doing that since she isn't very good at the game yet at all.
be humble. don't act like, "oh I'm so good at this game!" but don't be excessively modest, "I'm not very good at all." if you say you're "decent" that works better. _________________

Let's see. You like the girl. She wants you to teach her? Hmmmmm. What's the obivious choice? DO IT! As for teaching. Start her on 1 foot songs, tell her not to always put her feet back in the center and just keep practicing. Then when you want to, ask her out. But one thing, don't have your friend ask her out for you. |

I used to be shy that way too, but this is an opportunity you can't pass up. Just teach her as you taught youself, and try to overcome your shyness. You'll see how easy it is to overcome it if you just swallow it and give it a shot. Now I'm not as shy as I used to be. As I said before, show her just how you started, and that should work pretty well. That's how I taught other people. Whatever you do, don't pass this up, because you have some pretty good luck on your hands here, and who knows when you'll get this opportunity again if ever. _________________

You lucky son of a gun... a girl you have a crush on wants to learn DDR from you, I hate you so much right now!!!
Just kidding, but if you pass this opportunity up I demand that you kick yourself 10 times daily for the rest of your life and stand in front of the mirror each morning greeting yourself "Hello idiot!"
Ok seriously now, if you don't mind let us now how you go with teaching her DDR - and of course let us know how it goes expanding your relationship. I reckon this girl has a crush on you as well, anyway. How do I kow? Just a hunch... _________________

Hmmmmmm well I'd say dont let your feelings take over that aspect. If you are feeling shy, please don't let that make you do stupid things as well as say stupid things. Something that drives people down is their shyness. Usually in my case it's the woman that's shy. I was never one to be shy. If only we could switch
But teach her DDR. Get to know her a bit better ask her questions. A woman loves questions.
(Just to let her know that she's involved and its not just about YOU. Something that a guy has trouble handling.)
Teach her how to play. _________________

You should definitly do it! It's not only an opportunity to get someone else interested in DDR but to learn about her and become her "friend" anyway...i met a guy playing DDR (i'm a girl) and it was great so maybe it could be the same for you! Like violet said make sure it's not only about you cause that could make you seem egotisical (sp) |
