The second time I played DDR I had a bad encounter with the person currently playing (see my intro thread) and I was wondering, if you can't ante up a token, how does it work exactly? Or was it just one player with a bad attitude? _________________

I would suggest you link to your intro thread or go over it again, because I doubt people want to hunt your thread down. _________________

I hope I understand what you mean by "ante up a token". There are two possible ways that I can imagine you doing it, one pisses the hell out of everyone, one is an acceptable way of holding your place in line.
If you "ante up" by putting a token directly into the coin slot, you will be condamned and there's some damn good reason for it. Not only are you steping directly onto the stage, you also interrupted someone's rhythm by making the coin inserting "pang" song that DDR machine makes, both very distracting... if someone is doing PA and damn close to getting it, they'd either give you an angry face, yell at you, or punch you down for it.
If you "ante up" by putting a token above the small indentation just below the screen, then you're using the coin queue system that has been used by DDRers since the dawn of time -- universally accepted, save some some jerks who wouldn't give up their turn -- it's their fault in that case, don't blame yourself.
Just in case, you might want to avoid putting up a coin while others are in the middle of a song - that can still be distracting to some; do it when they are selecting a song. Other than that, stay near the machine, or you'll easily lose your turn when you're playing something else. The rather unspoken rule is that if you have seen someone try to play a second time before you get to play once, you are entitled to cut in front of him/her. Just kindly ask "I've seen you play once, can I go first?" and any REASONABLE person would give his/her place to you.
Of course, we've all had our share of unreasonable bastards who hog the machine for no particular reason; whether they're good at it or not doesn't matter, they're still being jerks. In that case, that arcade don't deserve you, man, go somewhere else.
As far as picking song is concerned, if you have an Extreme machine, all beginners are highly recommended to stick with beginner mode. If not, stick to basic/light mode. Some arcade mixes guarantees that you pass the first song even if your bar drains up; otherwise, beginner/basic/light songs are just made for beginners.
The first thing that you need to understand in order to play DDR well is your sense of rhythm. Anyone can smash arrows (and as you advance, more arrows), it's WHEN you should smash arrows that really matters. Notice that when arrows are spaced the same distance, it takes the same interrval for them to travel to the "sweet spot" on the screen. If you may, you can try counting internally "1, 2, 3, stomp, 1, 2, 3, stomp". Better to have your feet ready on the 3rd count though, or you'll be late.
Never, EVER follow the instruction screen on ANY of the arcade mixes. They are completely incorrect and learning them will only impede your progress in learning how to play well. Play like everyone who can handle a maniac/heavy song: alternate your feet and stay on the arrow you step on. It might be harder to get used to, but it sure as hell would make you climb the progress bar faster.
Best of luck on your road of DDR. It's gonna be tough - but climbing the ladder really is half the fun. _________________

*scribbles notes furiously*
What I meant by "ante up" was to put a token on the little indentation of the screen. I'm not some wet-behind-the-ears newb, i've been around my fair share of arcades. I'm pretty sure I anted when she was choosing a song, because she had the time to chew me out for it. Thanks a WHOLE lot, it's good to get advice from someone who's been there already. _________________

Yeah, that's the one.
One thing I observed is that if you do well enough, you get to choose another song. Is it customary to let the next person in line take it, or are you supposed to keep going until you crash? _________________

Though I'm sure the other people in line would love you if you gave them your remaining songs, I wouldn't recommend it. (Doesn't 75ยข seem like a rip off for one song?) _________________

Everyone should know what the coin line is and does. I bash on newbies on those who don't. And I hate those who take my turn when I am currently about to go up! |

I love the mom's that insist that their daughter is next even though i've been there for an hour waiting.. I just look at them and laugh hysterically, say whatever take my coin from the machine and play. but i Agree the coin line is the only way to save yourself from my fury if you try to cut in front of me i shall smite thee down with the wrath of...an....um angry ddr player? _________________
