How did you get to the point of passing 13, 14, 15, etc foot songs? Were you already in shape? Do you work out regularly? Do you just play DDR a lot, like 3-7 times a week for hours at a time? What's your mile run time? Do you attribute your success to form when playing? Heel-and-toe? Obviously practice sets the top players from the rest, but what specifically makes top players better?
I'm currently working on passing all of the 12 footers, and I am attempting some 13 foot songs such as Summer, Anisakis and Infernoplex. I run the mile in 5:39, but I die on songs like Monotone, Fer Sure, Heaven, Stuntin' Like My Daddy, and so on. My accuracy is okay; I can AAA up through some 10 foot songs. _________________

I wish I could run the mile in 5:39. or under 7 minutes.... Anyways, just play alot. According to most people running stamina doesn't affect dancing stamina. As for me, I can pass 13's and 14's like Destination and Boss on Parade, and I only play once a week for about an hour or two. I'm also not in the best shape I could be. Just keep playing it'll come. The best advice I can give you is try playing in socks, that put my stamina from being tired by 11's to 13's and 14's, almost instantly. It was really weird.... _________________

Do you mean to play in socks for arcade or for a cobalt flux? I play mostly on a cobalt flux, and socks tend to snag a lot on the edges. I feel like I have to slow down my movement, or it might be because I barely lift my feet off the ground. _________________

Being of the older group on this forum (27 years old lol), I will tell you beating stamina songs that are rated 13+ isn't exactly something you can just jump into overnight.
I try to go twice a week for about an hour or two.
I can't really explain how to do it, but I can get you there faster:
1. Drink lots of water.
2. Stretch before you play.
3. Eat something light and full of vitamins and a little carbs (like a salad or a veggie soup).
4. Don't launch into it on your first round. This is my measuring stick:
When you get to the point where playing on a certain difficulty no longer tires you, then its time to move your "bottom rung" up a notch. Some players have a difficulty level they go to once they are warming up or tired. Usually it's the same difficulty level.
With me, I either warm up on a really difficult 9 or a moderate 10. You wanna work on something that's gonna get you warmed up and in the mood without making you sweat right off the bat. Find songs that you want to work on FAing early on and do that first. After that, you can start stepping up your game.
This is my set-up but you might find something different that suits your needs. My set up is to work FA and endurance simultaneously.
9/10, 10, 11, 11
11, 10, 11, 12
10, 11, 11, 12
9, 10, Boss Parade/ Welcome to Rainbow / etc.
The idea here is that I wait until I'm really warmed up before I get into it, because it's 1800+ steps without stopping. |

Learn to MA/FA on easier songs before shooting for the big 13s. Being to hit the notes accurately works wonders on songs like Pandemonium with huge streams that will kill you if you stray off the beat. If you're playing ITG, you should at the very least be able to star anything below a 10 if you're going to shoot for the big ones. _________________

Going off what he said, if you are getting stars within a certain difficulty range, ignore it and focus on the difficulty range above it. |

I must disagree, stamina is probably 80% of the requirement to pass >13's. |

I must disagree, stamina is probably 80% of the requirement to pass >13's. | That's kind of why I mentioned my mile run time, so I can get some sort of measuring stick as to at least how I compare in cardiovascular condition. I don't usually die from having to breath too hard, it's my legs that can't keep up the pace which causes poor accuracy. Often I have trouble hitting the back button (I hit a bit above on the center button), or I have trouble reaching all the way up to the up arrow. I'm experimenting with bracket raping (heelntoe) techniques, and I'm working on strengthening my foot muscles by doing simple up and down exercises while sitting to simulate the experience of heel and toe. If I could do heel and toe as well as JDongs, then I could pass practically any song on my feet. _________________

Ninja pretty much sums up what I was going to say.
Warm up first, then do stretches. This will increase your flexibility overtime and help enhance and quicken your reach.
Make sure you warm up before doing stretches!
Performing cold stretches has a detrimental effect and increases your chance of injury.
Eat a lot of carbs 2 days before you plan to work on endurance and attempt this. You'll need the energy.
Eat lightly the day off, like what Ninja said.
Running: Great running time!!, I can only run 5.7 miles.
How far do you run?
Running for distance will significantly increase your endurance.
I have completed 2 marathons, and adding distance helps a ton with endurance.
Socks, I recommend never using socks, too slippery and they snag.
On CFs doubles, I wear shoes, Singles I go barefoot.
I primarily play doubles, when I was preparing for energizer, I would warm up with 9s, and 10s. Do a few 11s, and then as many 12s as I could be tiring out.
Also, doing foot exercises and/or running barefoot will strengthen your foot muscles and assist endurance, flexibility, and speed.
(Note: if you do run barefoot, you must condition your foot for this, it usually takes, 1-2months of walking, then vshort runs)
Some information on that is below:

Interesting. I'll stop stretching first.
I eat lots of carbs practically every day
Typically I only run up to about 4 miles. I'll run for an hour at 7mph and see how that goes.
I can't play with socks
I ran barefoot all the time back when I played soccer at my pool every day. Unfortunately, that was at least 8 years ago when I was in much better physical condition than today due to swimming and soccer. _________________

You're welcome, here's a few links to studies done on stretching.
This article is based on study performed by Stephen B. Thacker, director of the epidemiology program office at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Running barefoot is excellent for strengthening your foot muscle and preventing injury when running.
Condition your foot first, start with walking barefoot a few times a day on concrete or asphalt before attempting to run. Do this for 3-4 weeks, then starting doing short 7-10 minute runs.
Your foot will become a soft leather (it will actually be softer than normal people's feet, and you're callouses will fade away).
You will notice a drastic improvement in your running, and your step will became gentle and quick. |

I'm not all that good, but I could pass a few unofficial 13s. I don't work out at all. DDR was the first rhythm game I played (started in April '06) and at this point I play only once a month. I started with decent stamina though. I dunno how but I never truly felt tired till I tried 12+ songs on ITG.
Honestly, best thing to do is play consistently on a weekly basis at least. |

I played for 2.5 hours today on my home cobalt flux (OpenITG timings). Last week I played for 4 hours straight.
I died at about 50% through Welcome to Rainbow.
I died at 13% through Stuntin Like My Daddy.
Died on last run of Fer Sure.
Passed Utopia easily, which I can't remember if I had passed earlier... but I've passed every 11 now.
Got an A on Xuxa without getting winded at all... same for Crazy Loop and several 10 footers.
I have trouble on 12's like Energy and Bloodrush. They're just a bit too fast for me without a bar.
Tomorrow I'm going to get on the treadmill and run at 7mph for an hour straight. _________________

haha, well I used to be a very competitive swimmer, so I have a high tolerance for conditioning pain. I do know that 7mph for an hour is below what I can handle right now. My biggest concern is how to occupy myself for a whole hour. I don't have an mp3 player or ear buds. I get bored pretty quick unless it's intense training. I'll feel it the next day and perhaps the day after, but everything will be fine. If I can play 4 hours of 11, 12 and 13's, dying over and over again, then I can handle an hour at a leisurely 7mph. _________________

why don't you just do the smart thing and pace yourself correctly. _________________

OGRE wrote: | why don't you just do the smart thing and pace yourself correctly. | What do you suggest then? I already run 4 miles at a faster pace than 7mph. So what should I do? 5 miles? then 6 miles? then 7 miles? The point is that I run for an hour to build endurance. I picked 7 mph as a normal jogging speed. _________________
