What is the best soft pad for modding? I'm asking this because I'm sick of ordering metal pads that come defective/break after a few days, weeks, or months, and I can't use shoes on foam pads. I have two official ITG soft pads, and two Konami soft pads. Are either of these good enough, or are there better ones? Also, what size plywood board should I get when I mod the pad(s)?

The Konami ones are excellent. I used 1/4" plywood for mine, and it was godawful. I think 3/8" is the thinnest you'd want to go. There's a soft pad mod guide in the FAQ section of the site (I think that's where it is, anyway) that seems to have become the benchmark. You can do it differently, but that's probably the best way.

Konami pads all the way.

Mine lasted at least a year and a half, until my 300 lbs friend stepped on the control box and crushed it. I used 1/2" particle board with mine.

I'd agree with DT, the guide here is the best way to go. (Thats how I did mine)

I have 2 Redoctane softpads from the ITG bundle, both modded on one piece of plywood. These have endured a lot (no bar 10+'s, sensitive enough for AAA's/ tri-stars), and still work just as good as ever.

Gamestop softpads are pretty good, too.

I don't know about the Konami pads.

I'm also thinking of modding a soft pad too.
So many inch thick does the board have to be? or at least recommended?

I got a 3/8 board. I haven't modded my pad yet, but the plywood seems good enough.

Also, I have another question. I keep seeing another version of the soft pad mod, but with a office chair mat instead of plywood. My question is, if I put a pad on a chair mat and cover it with vinyl sheeting, will I still be able to use shoes on it like I could on a plywood board?
