Hi,
I have had an unmodified Vortz 3.0 soft pad for two and a half years, and yesterday it suddenly went from fully functional to totally dead. Basically, I plug it in, and it does nothing whatsoever. No buttons have any response. I tired plugging other controllers into the PS2, and verified it is not the PS2 port's fault. I tried jiggling the wire around (thinking there might be a weak part) but at no time did any of the buttons register.
This pad has worked really well and I have had virtually no problems with any arrows acting up/being unresponsive. Before yesterday I would have guessed that this pad still had a lot of life left. I tried opening it up, expecting to see some severed/unplugged internal wire, but everything looks perfectly fine. I don't know enough about how the electronics work to know what I might want to troubleshoot. There is a circuit board in the way of a second circuit board, which is attached in a sort of permanent looking way, so it is hard to see much of the wiring. I don't want to pull it apart for fear of just breaking the whole thing (worse than it already is).
If anybody has any clue as to what might be wrong, or what I might want to look at, I would be most grateful. Sorry if I sound kind of clueless. Is it possible the thing just suddenly fried and I need to get a new one? |

| You got it two and a half years ago? That's when I started playing DDR, and it seems like kind of a long time for a soft pad to last... I've gone through three soft pads since then. They're not all that reliable when it comes to lasting long. All I can tell you to do is get another one. |

Yeah, there was some time in there where I would get lazy and not use it for six months at a time, so it's not 2.5 years of hard use. The only thing that makes me feel bad about getting a new one is the fact that none of the steps started failing, so it seems like a small thing.
Thanks for the advice though. I will probably just have to bite the bullet and get a new one, like you say. |

did you play in socks?
I think socks can cause static electricity with an unmodded pad, and can make it die out of nowhere (the signals just stop)
(this has happened to a few of my softpads in the past)
I'm pretty sure it says something about it in instruction booklets.
...but I don't know very much about the inside of the pad, so I could be wrong.

Seriously?? As a matter of fact, I do always play in socks... but that sounds like a one in a million thing that it would actually short out the pad. If it is true, well... the barefoot or shoes options are far inferior in my opinion =( |

well, softpads are cheap.
Get a new one at gamestop and some modding supplies from lowes, and $50 can get you a decent pad that will last quite a bit of time (even with hard use).
modded softpads + socks = ok
Actually, you could get a doubles setup for about $70.
Gamestop pads- $20 ish
Plastic- $10ish
Plywood- $20ish for a HUGE piece (enough for 2 pads, with some left over)
and strong tape.

Thanks for the tips. Is the plastic for putting under the arrows? I definitely couldn't go without the raised arrow feedback if I get a new pad! |

no, the plastic is for placing over the pad. (it's a soft plastic)
