Why do people think DDR is such a joke?

Why is that alot of times DDR is featured in something such as a movie or tv they make fun of it. For example in Grandma's boy, they take gaming so seriously they play competitive frog jumper, and when the DDR challenge comes around they make both players look like idiots and the game look like a joke. What did the DDR community ever do to anyone? This also happened in Family Guy and Robot Chicken. I don't know just somethin I was thinkin about...

I think its because its not really a "mainstream" game, kinda how if you watch a game review show such as xplay and others on G4, they don't really show how ddr is played by more expert players, they just show someone on beginner or light making a fool of himself. also i think it has to do with most of the music which is on ddr, if you look at a game like guitar hero which consits mainly of "american" music you will see that its taken alot more serious by media than ddr is. Again you can take a look at G4 to prove my theory

I think it's because DDR is meant to only simulate dancing, yet you still move your feet to a rhythm. The irony of this makes onlookers think it's some kind of strange dance that's meant to be like "real" dancing, and so all they know how to do is make fun of what they don't understand when they apply it to TV sitcoms or movies. Such reasoning is pretty much the reason why anything is stereotyped.

Also factor in the relentless selection of music DDR arcade games that are clearly more compatible for large audiences that appreciate techno/j-pop and such, and US audience doesn't exactly fit the bill on that.

It's because people are, in general, small-minded, bigoted, cliquish, crowd-following non-thinkers.

They aren't willing to even consider anything different from what they already know. Change scares them. It's basically why people suck, as a whole.

Because it has the word dance in it. Because their girlfriends prefer to speak to the players instead of them. Because it's different. Because the music sucks in the demos.

People think DDR is a joke because much of the community takes it too seriously. Like any other game out there that gets a fan base, there are people who define how cool or whatever they are by how good they are at the game. Not to mention many players I have talked to lack social skills - especially on the internet.

idk, it seems like theres a lot of reasons its weird. i thought it looked a little weird when i first saw it, but im a pretty weird guy, so thats probably why i enjoy it. as for why its looked upon as a joke and guitar hero isnt, well, lets see. guitar hero....lets hit plastic buttons....O poopy WE'RE ROCKIN NOW! DUDE SOMEDAY YOUR GONNA BE A ROCKSTAR!!!!!! i think thats no different than when people go "LOL YOUR DANCING" when they see you smashing arrows. the only thing guitar hero has on its side is reviewers, but does anyone else remember when reviewers loved DDR? guitar hero is a new DDR, in a couple years(maybe sooner), the whole thing will blow pass reviewers.

Because dance gaming isn't a very direct idea towards dancing or demonstrating physical prowess. We like it because it's fun.

VideoCWK ... We aren't taking it to seriously, look at the site your on DDRFreak... we are as the name suggests I would hope you are too.

And I agree with most of what was said, and it covers why in general people are shall we say negative to the game, But why does the media industry have to put it down like they do?
