Konami softpad problem

hello folks,
for a while I've had a problem with the down arrow on my softpad. It seems as though the arrow in question will only be "hit" ingame if it is the ONLY ONE THAT I'M TOUCHING. Like most people, I try to NEVER return to the center of the pad, so I almost never actually hit the down arrows.
Is this a common problem with Konami's softpads, is there a way to fix it, or do I have to get a new one?

Mod your soft pad, like almost everyone does. There are a bunch of tutorials on how to do it, many are on this site.

I don't think modding will do anything at this stage, I don't want/need to extend the life of my pad, because there's already something wrong with it.
