so i have windows vista and my dad wont let me install linux for stepmania, and since there are some open GL+vista compatability problems, SM wont work. Are any sims(like DWI) available with no openGL? if not, do you know any way to get SM running fine on vista?
also, dont say Lol you shouldnt get vista, because i told my dad, but he didnt listen. _________________

Instead, I'll say Lol you shouldn't get Linux. _________________

Both Stepmania and ITG use OpenGL (they're the same thing, after all), and DWI is pretty seriously outdated. I don't know of any other simulators that are in a usable state.
Honestly, if OpenGL isn't working, you should probably try to fix the underlying problem - SM is hardly the only thing that uses it. |

yeah, i DLed DWI...it really sucks compared to SM. no wonder no one uses it anymore! but you'd be suprised that a lot of games use openGL for shading.
i e-mailed microsoft about the problem, and they said the next update is gonna fix all openGL problems. they also said the update will be available soon, so i should have SM running on vista well in no time! _________________

Actually, that's what I was trying to get at - lots of things use OpenGL. But yeah, good luck with that. If there's anything that doesn't work even after the update, you should probably talk to the Stepmania folks about it.
(If you've got a pad of some sort, make sure to test that too! If it doesn't work, again, talk to the SM developers - you're probably not the only person who'll want to use SM on Vista.) |

Open your StepMania.ini file and scroll to the bottom.
You should see "VideoRenderers=opengl,d3d"
Try switching it to "VideoRenderers=d3d,openGL"
I've run stuff in Vista under OpenGL before with no problems, don't see why you're having any. _________________

Couldn't you change it to Direct3D? _________________
