I'm looking for a metal (or durable equivalent) pad. I was looking around the forums here for some suggestions, and I've ruled out getting a CF, mainly because of price. I found this that struck my eye though:
http://mymybox.com/ddrmt6.html
Because I'm on a limited budget, this is perfect. A metal pad for cheap is right up my alley, but has anyone else tried this particular pad out? Also, it says in the specs that it can support up to 300lbs in player weight, which... may pose a problem. Is it possible that I could break the pad, being over 320 lbs myself? And does this pad only work with DDR Solo versions?
So yes, if anyone has had experience with this pad, let me know, and if you have any better reccommendations. Nothing too pricey though, sadly I don't bleed money .
As for any additional info I can give, I alternate between two houses, one where I play on carpet and one with linoleum(sp?), so consider pads that won't slip on carpeted floors when giving reccommendations. Thanks!
However, I'm willing to get one of those thick soft pads, you know, the ones with the foam inserts. I just need to be sure about this before a I make a commitment to buying a new pad.
Edit: Changed the topic title to something a little more fitting.

I doubt you're going to find an inexpensive pad that can support 320 lbs without trouble. I can see about tweaking some DT600 blueprints to make them tougher, but our recommended long-term weight max for them is only at 200 lbs now, although we test them at 225.
What you may want to do is get a SOLID piece of wood, about 2", and a softpad, then perform a basic softpad mod (I'm sure that you can find a good one somewhere in this forum).
Are you just starting? If so, you'll probably not be maintaining quite as high of a weight as you get to where a DT600 would start becoming stressed, but if you're really tall, or have a lot of genetic weight, maybe not.
I can build a DT200-600 hybrid, which would have the electronics of a DT600, but durability to rival the DT200, and it would cost less than a DT200, but it wouldn't be easily moveable. (it would weigh around 130ish pounds) _________________

I've been playing for about a year now, I am 6'5, 320ish lbs, and I can play most 8-footers, and some 9's if I put some considerable effort into it.
The reason why I'm looking for a metal pad or some kind of more durable pad is because the softpad I have now won't get me much farther in terms of playing ability. It's hard to attempt 10's on a softpad lol.
It doesnt even have to be metal. I hear of softpads with foam inserts that would also be alright. I just need some reccommendations for what I should buy before I start throwing my money around.
As long as I get some kind of pad, metal or not, that won't slip (much) on carpret and will improve my skills. I've also considered modding my softpad with wood, and I've looked over the guide on the site here. I just need something a little more durable that that . |

If your softpad is functioning properly, then you don't really need a metal pad or a foampad even. I played ITG/DDR 10's on my modded softpad, until I got a metal pad (a Cobalt Flux, I don't recommend one but whatever) and it wasn't because it was holding me back; I just lacked the skill. You should probably do the softpad mod before you buy a metal pad. =\ |

Just make sure to mod it with something solid, like I said earlier.
I suggest getting 3 good, thick planks and bolting them together using some sheet metal strips, then just attach you softpad to that.
If you want to get into playing at the arcade, there are some other mods you can do that makes it more arcadelike, but hell if I know 'em. _________________

Since the softpad modding idea seems to be a well-liked one, I guess I'll go with that. Beats having to shell out 250+ bucks for a metal pad.
As far as softpad modding goes though, I should just follow the plans on this site then? And is there any way to keep the wood itself from slipping on smooth floors? I foresee that as a problem. Or maybe I could just lay the modpad on a small rug?
Thanks for the input by the way! |
