Is there anything that can be done to stop them? I mean, in about an hour that I was on here, probably 3 or 4 different ones posted crap. Is there any any way to keep them from registering?

Yeah, disallow all new registrations.

(Hint: There's nothing you can do to completely shut out spam bots unless you also affect a good amount of actual people unintentionally, too.)

Nothing to completely shut them out, yes. But there must be some way to reduce the number of spambots.

I'm not saying it needs to be done now - there aren't really that many here yet (well, there are a ton that sign up but most of them never post). There are definitely more of them than there used to be, though. If nothing is done, what's to stop DDRFreak from ending up like this?

We could add a question at the bottom of the registration form that says "Prove your not a spambot. What is this website about? C'mon, you know the answer, starts with a 'D', ends with an 'R', you know...". Since these bots go everywhere and we'd be the only site with that question, they wouldn't fill it in and thus would not be able to sign up.

That seems like a pretty clever solution to me.

There's many logical solutions but implementing them is hampered by the limitations of the coding of the forum.

The question isn't a bad idea, *but* it does nothing against manual signups, not to mention it brings targeted signups.
Worse than the automated spam IMHO.

Wait, some of the spammers here actually sign up manually? How do you know? That doesn't seem like a very efficient way to advertise something.

And what are targeted signups?

Thanks. It wasn't my idea though, they use that on Poopreport to weed out bots. And it works.

And what happens if someone types out "Dance Dance Revolution" ?

Tell them it's a 3 letter abbreviation?

In my opinion, a better solution would be to make all new members put a verifacation on their first post, which would prevent a lot of problems from new members registering and complaining that they can't register, only to have them not post.

Problem is some members don't post after they register, they do so only to work with the machine locations database.

That's not a problem, Phrek.
In that case, we don't care, because they're not posting spam E10.gif.
(Machine Locations is in tighter moderation than posts.)

Spambots that don't post aren't a problem.

Well you know how before you register, you have to click the checkbox (or whatever) agreeing to the faq? Well what if you added another link/checkbox/whatever that said "I disagree" (I don't remember what it looked like, I haven't signed up in a while) and then write in big text above them both "Click "I diagree" if you agree". That'd work.

EDIT: Hey, why not add a feature that won't let a beginner member make any posts containing ".info" in them? A lot of these urls end in .info, so that'd help.

I really hate to bump this and repeat the tired line of "Do something about it," but I think it's time to bring it up again, since I see 3-4 new spambot threads every night, and while deleting them works, it doesn't exactly prevent it...
