I'm thinking of getting a laptop computer for school next year, but I can't seem to find any in any stores that run at least 2.0ghz. One of my plans for a laptop is to carry around Stepmania, AV cables, and a USB-PS2 converter (and maybe some pads if nobody has any) so I could have a portable arcade sort of deal.

I hear Stepmania is huge offender for lag/choppiness on anything below 2.0ghz though. Is this true?

Yes, its true StepMania lags on laptops. On my sister's 1.6 GHz laptop, its a bit off-sync by like 1/3 of a second. I wouldn't recommend plaiying on a laptop if you're aiming to AAA stuff.

this only applies to Laptops right? My computer is 1.6 ghz. and stepmania runs 50x more than smooth.

I'd assume so. It plays just fine on my friend's old (year 2000) Compaq Presario desktop. The framerate on laptops isn't perfect either, but its not unbearable.

I don't have a laptop, but I'm running a 1.10 Celeron in a Dell Dimension 2100 and SM is slightly lagging, especially if I have backround animations. I suggust you don't use backround animations and cut out the announcer and dancers. Otherwise, it dosn;t lag.

Could RAM play a part in it as well, maybe the graphics card? I saw a really nice laptop for only $899 with about that much in ghz. I don't have a lot of BG movies or anything, I mostly play with a static PNG in the background or something at most.

Your graphics card has a lot to do with it, as StepMania uses OpenGL graphics heavily. (Yes, for 2D graphics - it actually helps quite a bit.)

The reason StepMania doesn't usually run so well on laptops is not the processor speed so much as it is the video card. I had a 2.4ghz laptop a while ago and it only had a 32mb video card. My 2.0ghz desktop has a 128mb video card. The video card takes a huge load off the main processor for applications such as StepMania, which is why it can run ok on some of the faster processor laptops. You can simply upgrade your laptop video card to something more up to date and it will run nicely.

EDIT: Nevermind, you're not the same guy.

actually i am playing stepmania on my laptop lately, and it runs fine.
It is an Intel Core Solo 1.8GHz, and has some poopy Intel VGA, but the VGA takle 128MB of the 1GB RAM, so I am guessing the laptop RAM and laptop VGA memory allocation are doing the job.
I can run quake 3 very easily on 1024x768 with 60fps+
So the CPU power as someone said is by far not the most important thing these days.

i doubt you can see a decent laptop screen (at least a modern laptop) lag, if so, i doubt it would be any good for watching movies and DVDs...

I would never play SM on anything other than my laptop. The keys have perfect response time (unlike typical PC keyboards with buttons like a foot tall), and I have never noticed any lag issues with the screen at all.

Inspiron 9300, 2.0 GHz Processor M, 1 GB RAM, 256 MB GeForce Go 6800 nVidia card. Probably getting outdated b/c I bought it for last year's engineering department requirements, but it still gets the job done.

How much did that cost you?
