Ive played ddr for like 4 months and became quite good at it with my ebay bought generic pads with 1inch foam insert. (im no champ, but I beat every song on Heavy with almost only AAs and As except for Legend of Max on ddr ultramix)
Today however, both my dancing pads are starting to tear apart a bit everywhere and thats why I ended up here looking at the reviews of diffrent pads to know what to look for when I buy dance pads.
Ive seen some of you drool over some metal dance pad that had "lowered buttons". Whats the point of having the arrows lowered ? The only time I got to play on an arcade I was horrible at it because of those lowered arrows lol ! I kept tripping on the metal center and couldnt understand how someone could not do so on a very fast song.
Is it even possible to do 9 or 10 foot steps on an arcade style pad without holding to the bar (considering that the bar prevents you from tripping on the middle of the pad)?? |

Ask me (or AA Bob or just about anyone else that's passed 10's barless), I've passed 10's barless. The lowered panels are so you won't get lost on the pad like you do on softpads. Besides, it adds to the fun. |

If you go to the arcade, play with shoes. You will tear your feet apart if you ever stub your foot/toes on the screws and corner brackets.
You'll get used to recessed panels and get a much better sense of balance as you play more on them. The only reason you're tripping on them is because you're used to a softpad.
Moving faster and beating the really hard songs is really just PRACTICE.
It's very possible to pass 9+ footers without the bar, but again it's just PRACTICE. I'm no real champ player either compared to some people out there, but I can pass 13 footers on ITG without the bar at the arcade. And it's really only thanks to practice. _________________

That's the first time I've ever seen someone with a complaint like that. o_o Anyway, yeah, lowered/recessed panels are a big deal because it helps keep your orientation on the pad like the arcade version. You mentioned you had soft pads with foam inserts. I dunno which ones you had, but they might have risers underneath the arrows, so the arrows are raised and the center and action buttons are recessed. Same idea, different implementation. |

Actually, now I take back what I said about using socks at the arcade. The metal's pretty sharp for bare feet. Previous post will be edited. |

Anyway, the point of the recessed arrows is so you can feel your way around the pad, like everyone else says.
I played on some unmodded, 2-year-old CF's a while ago; and you couldn't play doubles worth poopy on those things.
The key is to learn precisely how much to lift your feet when you move.
If the panels are recessed 0.2", lift your foot 0.205-0.225" for best results.
I usually end up lifting my feet up high on 9's and lower just because the only 9's that really drain me at all are So Deep and a couple ITG songs. _________________

I dislike the lowered panels on the DDR Extreme machine near me, however the SuperNOVA panels are still lowered but not as much. I have way more fun playing on the SuperNOVA machine because of the pads.
I'd assume that most homepads that have 'lowered panels' aren't as bad as the arcades. Most don't look it anyways. Good luck with your pad. |

i don't like the recessed buttons only because i developed bad habits from softpads and my own hard pad. |

Recessed panels have never bothered me much, but the screws give me hell when I'm tired. _________________

I've only tripped on the recesses once, but you'll get used to it. Even through fairly thick shoes like Airwalks or Vans you can feel where the metal meets the plastic, so you can make slight adjustments during play. |
