|
|
So, I'm starting to build my own pad with spare parts I've got laying around my room/the house, and I dismantaled my old Konami pad for the little card thing (PCB card, I think? I forget what it's called, exactly). It died awhile ago and I ripped the foam out to fix my RO3.0, but I kept it around. Now, my question for you guys is if I were to try to use this in my metal pad would I need to scrape off the black stuff on it and solder it where the black stuff used to be or what?
Pictures, yay. Thanks in advance for any and all help. _________________

I tried this with mine and it didn't work well. But any ways, I scraped the black off where I was soldering to , but I don't know if you have to. _________________

the better way to do it is to find where the black part leads to on the pcb, and you should be able to find a good soldering point. if you're having a hard time or if you aren't sure, check with a multimeter.
EDIT: now that i took a really good look at that pic, i noticed some circular things above each black part...are those holes or solderable points? i can't really tell from the lighting. |

They aren't holes but I dunno if I can solder to them or not. That was my original plan, I guess I'll check it out with a multimeter or something and see if they'll do the trick. _________________

if you soder there, make sure that you use #6 wire. its the best strengthwise and size.
and the black stuff...wash your hands after or if you scrape it off. i scraped some off and didnt and it left an irritation spot on my hand. it may contain lead or something _________________

Solder containst lead (30% usually - the rest is tin and possibly a small amount of copper)... so no, that's no the problem (is lead irritating anyway? 'cause I've been around solder since I was six and no problems at all. No that I've been inhaling it/eating it - lead poisoning is BAD - but skin contact? That shouldn't be a problem.
So the black things had something else, although they should be mostly carbon (which is the most abundant element in your body after water), so maybe it was the binder or something?
Anyway, those spots above the carbon contacts are solder test points. Solder there, but don't use way too thick wire or you'll risk pulling them off. Use some kind of multistranded wire - the thinner speaker wires should work. Telephone cabling is alright but since it's solid-core, it's harder and transmits more force to the joint, so it might break earlier. |

hey im doing the same thing and i just tested it with my xbox madcats mat and a multimeter. i got around 3 volts when testing it but then i put it on a slightly thicker wire solder point (where the wires from the controller wire to the circuit board) and i got 5 volts for that one thick wire. im making a box for my pad too and i just dont want to fry the circuit board with the first press of the box by hooking it up to the 5 volt wire instead of the 3 volt wire. i hope you guys understand what im asking. i dont know if the xbox mat can take 5 volts instead of 3 and also, what the crap is that one 5 volt wire doing there? is there to power all the steps, and if it is then why are the strips only 3 volts? (resistors maybe?) _________________
