I used to do this regardless of who was playing, half of the time it was with strangers. Then one time last year some guy was playing light mode, and i started s o r t a tricking, not realy just double footing single steps and knee dropping and such.

The guy after the song called me a moron for mocking him, the funny thing is that i wasnt trying to mock him but i could easily see how he could get offended.

Should i stop shadow stepping all together?

Do you enjoy having your knee caps bashed in? No? Then yes, you should probably quit. E13.gif

Actually, the rule of thumb is, if you insist on shadowing, you should ASK the person if it's okay with them. I'm personally not easily distracted, and as long as someone isn't jumping around like an idiot (read: with the INTENT of looking like an idiot) or running in front of the screen, it usually doesn't bother me what people do. It really varies from person to person.

So, step 1: Ask them.

Step 2: When in doubt, DON'T shadow.

In all of my experience, shadowing lands you a spot in the "I Hate this nOOb so much" book of most experts.

5 years ago, when I started playing, I almost got my buttocks kicked when I put my damn quarter in the coin line while someone was playing.

Bottom line:
DO NOT SHADOW UNLESS YOU ARE INVITED. DO NOT ASK. Most good players will have little to no respect to someone who asks to shadow. And even less to someone who doesn't ask.

Don't EVER jump up and start shadowing without being asked. That's a good way to get the crap beaten out of you. If you absolutely have to shadow, at least ask first. Sometimes you'll find someone who really doesn't mind, but don't just get up there on your own.

If you're shadowing, make sure you stay off the pad unless the player says you can. Even then, make sure you don't make as much noise as him. Nothing will earn you a punch in the mouth faster than making a lot of noise and throwing someone off time because you suck ass and don't know how to get Perfects.

Yes, shadowing is stupid, and the people that do it deserve a nice smack in the face from whoever they're shadowing.

*Points above*

See what I mean? Many pros tend to be easily distracted and whine a lot if the gaming environment isn't EXACTLY the way they like it. Therefore, you're probably best off not shadowing.

No, don't stop. But don't jump on the machine and start to shadow without asking. I usually don't mind, but some people are so good at distracting you it seems like they practise at home. The other day I nearly passed MAXX UNLIMITED and some guy came on the other pad and shadowed without asking. It was a bit distracting, and I failed.

Personally, I would never shadow someone unless I have at least talked with them before. I've actually never shadowed a stranger either.
I've only shadowed with friends. My point; dont shadow complete strangers. nono.gif At least ask if you are bold enough to try shadowing a stranger.

Ya I would sugget shadowing with people you know. I've shadowed maybe once with a stranger. I asked he said it was ok. You have to becareful because you didn't pay for that game. So be respectful to the person who is actually playing.

This guy ask if he can shadow and I really didnt care. But... why people get on the other pad and start shadowing?

I thought he going to shadow behind me or something.
Someplaces, I see like 5 guys shadowing behind me. its annoying. I see their reflections on the screen and sometimes I busted out laughing and failed.

Iono I always play versus so if I'm alone I really don't care if anyone shadows.

However, if you shadow me, DO NOT: show off your wicked gay freestyle attempts (it's distracting and arrogant), shadow songs that are too hard for you, touch me / flail around, jump on halfway through, keep a running dialogue on when I screw up, ever shadow doubles, assume we're friends because I can ignore people on the other pad.

Step 1: Post this in the "Share all (that's right, ALL) Arcade Experiences Here" Thread
Step 2: Stop shadowing without asking permission or you will be shot.

Step 1: Stop Being an Unofficial Moderator. This very well can fit into Chit-Chat material, and if a moderator thinks otherwise - THEY WILL DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
Step 2: Correct.

------------

On Topic:

Like everyone's said -- shadowing is bad. People will get pissed at you; newer players will think you're either making them out to look bad or making fun of them and more experienced players will know that you're bothering the hell out of them.

If you want to shadow someone, ask first. If they say yes, then do it behind the pad, out of their field of vision (i.e. directly behind them) and do not stomp or step loudly. Also, do not freestyle while they're playing unless they give you permission to do so. That's really rude. If you want to FreeStyle - do it during your turn during your songs.

If a person tells you "No". Then heed their advice. No MEANS no, it doesn't mean "Well, so long as I don't know you're doing it, it's okay". It means no. Don't even bother, just let them play. Occupy yourself with something else. Go bother the arcade workers, go look at the other games, go get a drink of water or talk to other DDR players or something.
'
You will land yourself in some problems with lots of players and generally come across as annoying (not to mention a noob) if you continue to shadow without asking permission.
