Top 10 Rythm Games
http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/top10/612.html
Quote: |
#10: DJ Max Portable (PSP)
This is unusual. A rhymn game on.. a handheld? And one which is slightly superior to the game it clones (Beatmania). To top it all off, a killer music selection, unlimited gameplay modes, and even a msuic video gallery. Although unlocking everything can be the blazes, the magic of gamesaves makes it enjoyable by everyone. Even if players must import this title, the PSP being region free offers little excuse why this title isn't in every PSP collection. Or at least rhythm game fans.
#9: Pump It Up Exceed 2 (ARC)
I guess I pretty much have to place a phsyical dancing game here. But why not DDR? Truth be told, DDR was rather contrictive in movement. You had to get good before you could begin even the slightest hint of a trick. Pump It Up? Well, let's just say the layout remains showboat special. Not to mention it featured a robust lineup of music that was genuinely good compared to it's competitor, who anyone who's not a fan can accurately call "annoyingly busy." Though I know many will hate me, I just gotta give the props to Pump It Up in this particular arena.
#8: Gitaroo-Man (PS2)
Is it all just a dream? Did I really just ride a UFO trying to out thrash on a supery Europop track? Did the drum and bass space shark really just jam out some Reggae? Is that really a jazz musician in a bumble bee suit? And is the main logos soundbyte dangerously close to an orgasm? Yes, my friends, yes. Gitaroo Man plays silky smooth but the story is told like something out of the most bizarre concept book of Lewis Caroll. And we love it for that.
#7: PaRappa the Rapper (PS)
Personally, I was never a big fan. But I was, perhaps, one of the only ones. Parappa made a huge splash thanks to it's memorable music, outrageous story, and unique art style. Just tell them Master Onion sent you.
#6: Space Channel 5 (DC)
From some deranged thought process comes a space reporter in Go Go boots trying to rescue hostages, outdance aliens, and even putting a halt to Space Michaels imprisonment. One of the collest features of this game is the fact that successfully rescued hostages actually change the background music as they march along with your army.
#5: Amplitude (PS2)
Take everything that was great about the first (Frequency) and kick it up by ten. Amplitude required razor sharp reflexes to maintain a decent song mix and while it's the first time Harmonix shows up on this list, it's definately not the last.
#4: Samba de Amigo (DC)
Who would have though a monkey and his maracas could be a concept worth getting into? But as the samba beat takes hold of Reel Big Fish's remake of Take On Me by Ah-ha, those annoyingly bright plastic maracas take flight. Pose!
#3: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (GC)
Okay, so you have this pair of bongos with no apparent use after you've mastered being on the road again. Whatever is a fella to do? Answer comes in the form of Jungle Beat. Most music games get their peripheral for that one outting, never offering anything outside of song packs, but the drums on Gamecube actually received a full fledged adventure game controllered entirely by drumming, clapping, and... drumming your way through the game.
#2: Guitar Hero (PS2)
It may not have been the first guitar simulator, but it's definately the best. And not by short leaps either. Guitar Hero did something no other rhythm game has done, removed the "dork" label from peripheral based gameplay. Anyone from school teachers to stoners could grip the plastic axe and find instant joy being reminded that, yes, Ziggy did, in fact, play guitar...
#1: Bust A Groove 2 (PS)
Such a simple concept. Take your unusual character and outdance your opponent. And yet it never really caught on. The gameplay was flawless and the music score was beyond question, but it remained a passed over gem until it found it's home as a heavily sought after niche title.

I lol at the lack of DDR or ITG. As everyone knows, they're 2 of the 4 best rythm games, which is fairly widely agreed upon (other 2 being Beatmania and Guitar Hero) |

They obviously made a mistake with that list. It's obvious because ITG isn't on it. |

1.Why is parappa not number 1?
2. Where is ITG?
3. The person who made that list obviously has difficulty moving his legs up and down to the rhythm of music. |

I think DDR or ITG never made it onto the list because most of the time he only likes it because of the music. Whenever I play DDR I hear the music, but I don't really think about it much. |

Only trust GameFAQs for FAQs. That's why it's called GameFAQs. _________________

At least they have one dance game in there, but then again, I hate Pump It Up. Those idiots. How do they prefer garbage like Bust a Groove over DDR and ITG?
They also don't have beatmania, although that game seems to have been a huge flop in the US due to negative reviews. _________________

I didn't know that dedorkifying a plagiarized video game idea constituted as a good enough qualification to earn #2. But to each his/her own! |

Top 10 lists are written by one person, and that person has an opinion. S/he doesn't like DDR or ITG as much as 10 other music games. What's wrong with that?
EDIT: Quote: | And there you go. Certain titles didn't make the list and for that, I'm sorry. Also, I'm sorry I couldn't appease the DDR and In The Groove fans out there by at least having one showing but I just felt these games were superior. But then again, these lists are all about opinion. And if you take the P and I out of opinion, you're left with an onion. A master onion, that is. |

Well, I personally think Top 10's should at least PARTIALLY based on mass appeal.
DDR is mad popular.
Sure, I like ITG better, but no DDR up here REALLY surprises me. _________________

What? ITG?
In all seriousness, they did add some buttons to the controller. |

Guitar Hero. Does not. Beat any rhythm game. It is horrible compared to Guitar Freaks. And all those (except maybe PIU, depending on the person who are talking to) suck horribly compared to DDR/ITG.
My top ten list.
1.) DDR
2.) Pump it up
3.) Beatmania
4.) Guitar Freaks
5.) Drummania
6.) Keyboardmania
7.) ITG
8.) Pop'n Music
9.) Flow
10.) Para Para Paradise
Most of you will disagree with the placement of ITG on /my/ list, but its better than not on there at all <.<. I hate GameFAGs _________________

Why don't we all just make our own!
My list
1. Beatmania/IIDX - Not seperating the two, they're close enough. And because it's been going for MANY years and was basically the start of real music games
2. DDR - Despite not have a good ARC release in many years, people STILL play it, STILL run large tournaments for it, and it is STILL fun, though to many not as fun as ITG or PIU. It still gives competition though despite age.
3/4. PIU/ITG - Difficult stepping games going where DDR hadn't gone. Hitting different genres of music, and higher difficulties and various styles of play made these surpass DDR in many ways. Too bad they didn't have as big of an impact as DDR (though both have hosted nation/worldwide tournaments for their fans, bless their souls).
5. Bust-A-Groove/Move - It has brought many good times for me. Something as simple as tapping in a few arrows and a key after that just makes me smile. And I still love the music. Sad thing it's rare now and I gave away my copy as a BIRTHDAY GIFT (I'm too nice )
6. Guitar Freaks - Nothing like playing what seems simple and making it into an extrodinarily hard game. Most people, now, look at it, will call it a copy, or will think it's easier than Guitar Hero, then watch them foil in the ageless goodness. Music is good, and game play puts out in difficulty.
7. Gitaroo Man - Hitting many different genres of guitar accompanied music made this cute game rawksome. Decent length for a music adventure game and gives you multiple modes of play plus a decent, but could be better multiplayer (if both players are on even skill level).
8. Ouendan - Holy crap, my DS screen got f@$&ed up from this game. All the songs are good, hitting in the J-rock/pop zone while you get your male cheer squad to dance(?) to the various stabs, pulls and spins you make at your DS while you save someone from their fate-worse-than-death problems. Four difficulties, but can be easily mastered.
9. PaRappa the Rapper 2 - "I gotta believe". Who expected a onion to rap? No one til this game (well the first one. came out. Even people knew these rediculous rhymes just from the commercials alone. They were catchy and simple, along with the gameplay (and rather 'epic' plotline). I personally think 2 prevails over one because of the music, it wasn't as simple, and it had more variety to the sounds. R&B likeness, Regge, Old-School Hip-Hop, even 8-Bit reminx-ish of all the songs. Win.
10. Amplitude - It's like IIDX but on mutliple parts! Doesn't stop it from being hard as hell Making all the different instruments to (usually) pretty good songs was well creative and as it said on GameFaqs, took Frequency and kicked it up by ten.

I dunno, O2jam shoulda been on there, but I guess it's only console games.
Anywho, I think it was all fairly accurate. I think what they said about PIU was about right. I like their music better, too. DDR and ITG are good, but I think he was trying to keep from sounding really generic. _________________

I think the Bust A Groove/Move series was awesome. That series got me into music games in the first place..sorry Parrappa just didn't do it for me. I still play all three games to this day. To bad that SquareEnix will most likely never make another one.
EDIT: Also I would like to add that after reading the first paragraph of the FAQ..the person was listing music games besides the all too well known DDR series. I mean...pretty much everybody knows what DDR is now. The only reason I bought DDR on a whim during it's first american release was due to the fact that I thought it would be like Bust A Groove. |
