Hello, I'm in a Physics class and have been recently assigned a project called the Physics of Sports. Our task is to choose a sport (or hobby), write about its history, talk about physics concepts involved in that sport, and show how physics is used in that sport. Being DDR obsessed, I chose to do it on DDR.
As of now, I need help on finding the history of DDR. All I could find was a paragraph on Wikipedia about when it was released. Does anyone know more about this history of DDR? Why Konami wanted to make it? People's initial reaction to it in Japan? ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT THE HISTORY OF DDR?!!?!?!
Secondly, I need to think of physics concepts related to DDR. I have alreayd thouht of some, but I would like to know ideas of other people. Does anyone have any idea of how physics play a part in DDR? Thank you. |

The concept of DDR was taken by applying the idea of Beatmania onto dancing, except not nearly as hard. _________________

Ok, seeing this gave me a couple ideas of what you could do and then depending on what specific physics class you are in (concept physics, 1st/2nd semester college physics or something higher such as stratics) will determine how in depth you can go.
The idea I thought of is based around Newtons laws and figuring out how much force the bar must push back with to support you when lean back onto it (thus, if it doesn't support back with that much force the bar would be pushed backward off of the machine). You could also go and figure out the exact force you need to use to hit the arrow to proove to people that you don't need to stomp on the pads to hit the arrows.
Just a couple of ideas you could go off of _________________

What does any of this have to do with The Physics of Sports? DDR is only a sport in Norway. It's just a video game to everyone else. _________________

I find the concept of using DDR for a science project extremely laughable.
You step on panels to beat of music. Big deal!!!
I think that there are much better sports/hobbies out there to use. Endurance sports are a perfect example.
Tracking the body's energy output during distance covered. You could theorize the body's output depending on body type,athletic level, and type of diet. Tracking times of which said activity is done. Tracking the training schedule and times during which.
If you ask me, picking DDR was a cowardly way to go. I can't imagine you providing very much information for this particular activity. I would love to hear what kind of information you provided for your paper.

I'm not doing College/High School Physics >.>, only 8th grade physics. Besides, everyone else is doing basketball, running, soccer, and volleyball. As a result, I wanted to pick something in the deep end, something CREATIVE. BTW, how is doing something that no one even thought of doing before cowardly? And I have a reasonable amount of information already (from my outline):
B. When playing DDR, many players put their weight on bars that are located on the DDR machine. Since weight is a force, the players are exerting a force on the bar, and thus, the bar is exerting an equal and opposite force back on the player (Newtonâs third law). This enables the player to effectively reduce the weight they must support, which allows them to move/dance at a much faster speed. Furthermore, the force that the bar exerts back on the player helps the player obtain better balance.
For example, a player who puts 50 Newtons on the bar will cause the bar to exert 50 Newtons back on the player, supporting him.
C. When a player steps on a dance arrow panel, the dance panel will exert an equal and opposite force back on the playerâs foot (Newtonâs third law). Due to this, the legs of players will tire more quickly. As a result, players always try to step as lightly aspossible on the panels and not stomp on them. This minimizes the wear on their legs. For example, players who stomp on the panel with 100 Newtons of force will have 100 Newtons of force exerted upon then. Players who gently tap the panel with 10
Newtons of force will have 10 Newtons of force exerted upon their legs.
D. Sometimes in DDR, there are songs and steps that require you to move/turn fast. As a result, players sometimes swing their arms around. If they do this, their arms gain momentum. The momentum of the playerâs arms causes the body to also move/turn in the direction the arm swings in. This boosts the speed that a player turns(which is required to do certain steps) or makes it easier for them to turn (as the body is already partially being forced to turn due to the momentum of the arm).For example, a player is facing left right after he finishes a set of steps. However, there is a set of steps rapidly approaching that requires the player to turn right in
order to do them correctly. The player normally can not turn right on time, so they swing their arms to the right and at the same time, they start to turn. The momentum of the arms causes the body to turn along with the arms. This allows the player to turn faster than they normally can.
E. Players accelerate their feet/legs to hit the dance panels all the time in DDR. When players lift their legs off the dance panels in order to step on it, they are accelerating their legs. Similarly, when players bring their legs back down to step on the arrows, they are also accelerating it, as the leg is increasing in velocityover a very short span of time. Playerâs legs also accelerate as they move from stepping on one arrow to stepping on another; they change direction. When playerstransition their legs from lifting up to stepping back down, they change thedirection of motion of their legs and thus, they accelerate them. For example,a player who has their foot at rest on a panel already lifts it up and speeds it up to 2 meters per second in one second. He or she accelerated their foot 2 m/s/s.
