I've not been the target of this and though the people who've been bashed of late are still here and the main bashers are still here, I just wanted to ask about the Forums FAQ on flamebaiting.

It's definitely been on the rise in the last few months, is generally begun with some religious topic or one that the search feature would normally find dozens of existing threads for or some new user posts something where it shouldn't go or is already answered in a sticky at the top of the same forum.

I realize most of the baiting and bashing occurs because veterans are tired of seeing the same noobish threads about everything and everyone (ex Gameplay Cartoon Heroes thread) and (Don't Underestimate girls in DDR) but mostly it occurs in random chat.

I'm not saying that points need to be handed out -- I'm only saying that if I were a lurking newcomer I'd be totally turned off of this site. Because I've been here a while I know many people here and find it generally enjoyable. Everyone has their place.

-- I want to add that the word filter is being disregarded by many many users here (as if you didn't know); my question then is why have a filter if you don't enforce it in some way?

I wouldn't. The only people who really get bashed here are the ones who are either completely clueless or go out of their way to be obnoxious. It doesn't really take much to keep from getting flamed/bashed; read the FAQ, search before creating a topic, don't deliberately cause trouble, use common sense, etc.

I think the main purpose of the filter is not to prevent everyone from swearing, but just to make it more difficult. That way, newcomers and clueless flamers (who don't know how to bypass the filter) won't be able to swear. And I think it works pretty well - I've been seeing "buttocks" a lot more than its unfiltered equivalent lately. biggrin.gif

So um, is it bad that awhile ago I was watching Family Guy, and when Quagmire came on, I thought something to the effect of "Whoa, It's AA Bob!" (I don't remember if the exact thought was "It's AA Bob" or "It's AA Bob's avatar", but I don't think it matters in this case)?

That's true I just wonder if it's sometimes going too far. But then members are required to read those FAQ's and stickies (heck I know I did before joining). Some people are a bit touchier than others but I think you're right on that. It's most definitely true I've never been flamed here.

Very true there, now that you mention it. Though I have seen plenty of unfiltered "poopy" and "frick" all over the place in recent months.

If Admin or Mods want to weigh in with your comments on this feel free or you can lock it. I think I'm satisfied for now.

Well, like you've pointed out, it's generally new users. And it just comes with the territory of getting used to place, trying to find out how to fit in. Some of the people here are rough to get along with, others will be helpful.

As for the filter, it's there to limit the obsencities but obviously it can be bypassed. Again, something most new users can't pick up on once they first come here.
