Also know as PIU, 5-box involves stepping on the dance pad where DDR players don't usually step. Since very few (home)pads support this feature, and most dance games coming out are 4-box, can games like PIU hope to survive in a world where 4-box pads are being churned out in China at alarming rates while 5-box home pads become increasingly more an afficinado's toy? Will the tide every be turned so the market share of home pads are 5-box compatible? Please don't limit the discussion - feel free to discuss 6-box (solo) and 9-box (whatever the hell that crappy game was called, not sure). and is there a possibility of 12 or 16 box or is 4 arrows enough to satisfy the genre?

PIU has only recently started releasing home versions, which come bundled with a high-quality softpad (let's emphasize the quality again). And, given PIU's success in the arcade, I'd say there's no reason to be concerned about competition.

I'm not discussing terminology and everyone seems to know what I'm talking about anyway. I'm just trying to gather info for my own purposes. Anyway I don't dispute the success of PIU - its a solid game. What I'm getting at is most games coming out seem to be on a 4 arrow trend. My theory is that when the game-making people are discussing requirements for a potential game, the idea of anything besides 4 arrows is unpopular because most people lack the equipment for playing it. Sure there is a softpad, but I haven't seen any 5 pannel pads offered (in the US) that aren't bundled with PIU, certainly no metal pads. If I was designing a new game, I would be hard-pressed to include support for more than 4 arrows (on single anyway). As the genre heats up isn't PIU market share doomed to dwindle given that the trend is toward home versions and that development of a software-only product is has a much lower cost of entry than development of a software-hardware product?

No, because the PIU arcade market is still going strong. PIU is like its own separate beast out there, and I like it for that. ITG is like the logical extension of the need to have something similar to DDR but of higher difficulty and quality. DTX is... something, but no one knows much of it yet. All those other games you mentioned are fairly insignificant in terms of real competition.

PIU has been around just as long as DDR so nothing is going to change anytime soon.

PIU has better music and stepcharts that are generally harder than ITG, and not because it's different. Not to mention the awesome videos of both freestyle and legitimate gameplay.

Also, 5-box? Wtf? HAY GIZE I S'D DIGNITY ON H4RDC0R3 5X2 BOX!!! THATS 10-BOX FOR U N00BS OUT THERE

You must have put it in a blender, these are the BEST soft pads ever... and that is just a fact. No arguments allowed. If you are thinking about arguing, then you are already wrong.

I've heard that the offical PIU soft pads are god. a friend of min eplays alot of PIU at home (No machines near here) and he says he's had his pad for years. PIU has had home version for a while, they just recently became popular tho, before it was all PC versions and then they came out with PS2 and Xbox version recently I believe.
-Ditto out

To the OP:
You don't look at the total picture. PiU is the most popular dancing game in the world. No joke, not even lying. The game itself doesn't need the US support to succeed because countries all over the world love Pump more than DDR. I only started playing 10 months ago and I swear by the game because of its stepcharts with limitless creativity. The game is harder than ITG and is lightyears beyond both games. Don't get me wrong, I love my DDR as I've been playing it almost 7 years, but Pump is my new favorite.

On topic:
You can mod a CF to play Pump with. Although it would be nothing like the arcade because of button sizing. I will also verify that the Pump pads are ungodly. I can pass up to 12s with 'em but anything above that I need to play in the arcade.
