Problems with Groove Radar

disgust.gif I made this simfile, and when I highlighted it on Song Select, it showed the song's Chaos, Air, Voltage, etc. on zero, even though I put 520 steps in it (including jumps). This is the first problem like this I have ever had with a simfile, so can anyone help me to resolve this bug?

Here's a screen of the buggy radar. This is the only song on my entire Stepmania that has this problem.






I'm not joking about this. I was going to post the step chart, but it didn't work.

Help please?

Is this an .sm simfile or a .dwi simfile? What did you make it with?

If it's an .sm, please post what the radar values specified in the file are. Look for something like this:

#NOTES:
dance-single:
something:
expert:
11:
0.512,0.604,0.427,0.227,0.071: // measure 1
0000
...

Ordinarily, if the radar values aren't specified in the .sm file, or if they're set to all 0's, Stepmania will recalculate the radar values in-game. If for some reason that isn't happening, it might be a simple matter of opening the file in Stepmania's editor & re-saving it to have it write the correct radar values into the file.

In fact, if you make a stepfile in something other than Stepmania's editor, opening it & re-saving it in the editor can solve various glitches and put the stepfile into proper, standardized format and run a number of error checks on it. It's also likely to wipe out any comments you've put in the file so make a backup first.

If you still can't figure it out, it probably wouldn't hurt to post the whole stepfile here (just the stepfile, not the MP3 or anything) to see if anybody can spot anything odd.

Let me answer these questions.

This is second time I began a simfile using sm.
I used the Stepmania Editor like always.
I saved it in UTF-8 Encoding so it would show the Japanese characters and the umlaut.
I tried reloading the song, as well as all of my songs, but nothing happened.
I moved the difficulty from Heavy to Challenge, but still nothing.
Resaved it, still nothing.

I pasted the steps you posted (including the all 0's for the radar values) into a stepfile and loaded it up in Stepmania. It detected & displayed the proper radar values. Since you didn't post the headers, I used the headers from an existing file & deleted the steps from it, replacing them with yours. If you post the entire .sm file, headers and all, I can try that to see if that works properly for me also.

Have you tried doing a Reload Songs/Courses from the Stepmania options menu? It could be as simple as Stepmania having an old version of the file cached in its catalog. Sometimes changes to a stepfile aren't automatically detected during startup, but the Reload Songs/Courses should update it if that's the problem.

Hmm... I think your Stepmania is broken.




I'm stumped, since it seems to work okay for me.

I tried it with the groove radar values in the file and with them set to all 0's. In both cases, it ignored that values in the file & calculated its own based on the steps.

The version that SearchingforAAA posted works fine for me when I save it & load it up on my system.

It looks like the only change you made to it was to move the //measure 1 comment down one line, which wouldn't actually make any difference because it's just a comment and thus is ignored by the program. Stepmania normally puts the //measure 1 comment on the line with the radar values anyway.

It still shows the proper radar values for me even if I completely delete the radar values from the file. Radar values in the .sm file are not required for the proper radar values to show up on-screen, in fact, as far as I can tell, Stepmania completely ignores the radar values in the file & calculates them dynamically when it comes time to display the radar.

Maybe I should try reinstalling Stepmania? That could fix it.

Edit: I reinstalled it and it still won't display the radar correctly. frown.gif

Any other ideas?

Couldn't hurt to try.

First, you might want to just try exiting the program, deleting the Cache directory, and restarting. It'll take a while to start back up (it has to re-cache everything) but if the problem is caused by cached data being out of date then it'll fix it.

What version of Stepmania are you using? The latest released, stable version is 3.9 final. That's what I'm using. There are also newer, still-under-development CVS versions, which could be buggier.

One final idea: what's the length of the MP3 you're using for this stepfile, and did you do steps for the entire length of the song? I think the length of the song factors into the groove radar calculations, i.e. if the MP3 is 10 minutes long but you only write steps for the first 2 minutes, then the radar values will get calculated far too low because the 8 minutes with no steps will bring down the average.. I don't have the correct MP3 for the file, so I first copied in a really long MP3 to make sure it was long enough, but the radar values wound up showing fairly small (not as small as in your screenshot), so I replaced the MP3 with a 2-minute ITG one, and I got the radar values I showed in my screenshots.

Well, I went to a theme that has the time of the song showing (Popcandy, for example) and it showed up as 00:00:00 even though the song's 2 minutes long.

I want to try restarting the cache, like you said. Can you tell me where it is? I don't want to end up deleting the wrong thing.

Hmm... it's strange that the song length shows as 00:00:00, and I suspect it's related to your radar problem.

When I saved your .sm and used it with a different MP3, I got the correct length (of the MP3, at least) and the correct radar values. So the problem could be with the MP3 itself, though I couldn't tell you exactly how.

To clear the Stepmania cache, make sure the program isn't running, then go where Stepmania is installed, i.e. C:\Program Files\Stepmania or whatever. There should be a folder there called Cache. You can safely delete it, but if you want to be conservative you can just rename it to Cache-Old or something. After the folder is deleted, moved, or renamed, restart Stepmania. It will be forced to rebuild its cache from scratch by completely re-indexing your song collection again, which will take a while.

The song's in wav format. That could be the main problem, even though the Stepmania Readme says it can read wav files. Let me try converting it to an mp3. If that doesn't work, I'll try deleting the cache.
